High Powered Offense Sweeps Scots

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Gordon College Baseball continued their stint down in Florida today with another double-header against Illinois Wesleyan University this morning. The Titans heated up in the bottom of the fifth and sixth to power their way to the 13-1 win in the first game. The Titans also took the second game with a score of 17-4.

Game One
  • Both teams stayed quiet for the first three innings of the game before the Scots made some noise in the top of the fourth. Josh Popovitch ripped a single down the middle and was able to advance to second off a throwing error by the Titan's pitcher. Then, Matt Paulsen made contact for a single of his own to push Popovitch to third and then another throwing error by the pitcher would send Popovitch home for the first run of the game. But the Titans quickly evened out the score in the bottom half of the inning when Evan Ranneklev (So./Naperville,Ill.) was forced home on a walk.
  • In the bottom of the fifth, the Titans took the lead after Brandon Skopick (Sr./Frankfort,Ill.) scored on a wild pitch. From there the Titans would add six more runs that inning to give themselves the 8-1 lead going into the sixth. The Titans would tack on five more, due in large part to a double by Nick Figus (Sr./Frankfort,Ill.) and a single by Skopick, in the sixth to take the eventual 13-1 victory.
Game Two
  • The Titans stayed aggressive to start game two, scoring five runs in the top of the first to jump out to the early 5-0. Eric Bennes (Jr./Palatine,Ill.) helped his team hold onto the early lead by striking out two of the three batters faced to bring his team to the top of the second, where they added onto their lead with two more runs.
  • The Scots began to knock on the door in the bottom half of the second when Jalen Coyne-Martinez singled up the middle to bring Erik Gauer home while pushing Shane Demers to third who would eventually steal home on a throwing error by the Titan's catcher. Cole Winkelman kept the Scots' bats going when he singled through the right side giving himself a RBI but would be left on base sending the game into the third with a score of 7-3.
  • In the top of the fourth, the Titans tallied four runs off of two deep doubles by Ranneklev and Jared Mutter (So./Frankfort,Ill.) to extend their lead to 11-3.
  • In the bottom of the fifth the Scots were able to tack on one more run off of a Gauer single before the Titans took over the rest of the game by holding Gordon to only onw more hit and scoring six runs of their own to seal the 17-4 win.
