Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Hawks Soar By Scots In CCC Duel

Hitting the road this afternoon, Gordon College Field Hockey ventured to Bristol, Rhode Island to square up against the Hawks of Roger Williams University (RWU). The Fighting Scots combated in all four periods of the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) match up but were eventually topped by their hosts, 5-1.

How It Happened
  • The Hawks came out of the gate firing, and immediately capitalized on their second penalty corner when RWU's Ella Waryas tapped in a rebounded shot from teammate Hannah Gaffney who attacked just inside the arc to give the Hawks an early 1-0 lead less than three minutes into the game. Although the Hawks were able to get five shots in before the end of the period, Gordon's defense held strong holding RWU to one goal in the first.
  • Once again, the Hawks wasted little time before adding to their lead, scoring their second goal just over a minute into the next period. Continuing to control the ball, Roger Williams' Brooklyn Cenatiempo buried her shot from the left side to give the Hawks a 3-0 advantage. The Hawks continued to attack the cage, but Gordon's keeper, Sophea Zaskoda stayed firm and concrete, collecting four additional saves to hold RWU at bay.
  • After the break, the Hawks quickly pushed for another goal, netting their fourth after RWU's Hannah Palmer drew out the Gordon defense to feed Cenatiempo across the field, locking in her second goal of the afternoon. After another prompt goal from the Hawks, the Fighting Scots battled to keep RWU shot-less for the remaining 11 minutes, ending the third period down 4-0.
  • In the last period, Gordon's Gina Ouellette whizzed one past the Hawks' defense however it was not enough to penetrate RWU's keeper. The Hawks retaliated with a shot of their own, this time missing wide. But Roger Williams was not finished yet, as they tacked on their fifth and final goal. The Scots refused to go down scoreless when senior Cara Goudie took advantage of a penalty stroke, placing it in the bottom left to give the Fighting Scots their first goal. Gordon continued to persevere, however it wasn't enough as the Hawks eventually secured the 5-1 victory over the Scots.
Beyond The Box Score
  • The Fighting Scots take a break from CCC play when they invite Worcester Polytechnic Institute to their home turf to begin battle at 7 p.m.
