Gordon College Women's Soccer traveled to Newport, Rhode Island for a Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) contest against the Seahawks of Salve Regina this evening. After seeing themselves down by one for the better half of the game, the Fighting Scots finished strong with two second half goals to soar past the Seahawks, 2-1. With the win, Gordon improves to 10-3 on the season (4-2 CCC), while Salve drops to 6-8-1 (2-3-1 CCC).
How It Happened
- The Scots challenged the Salve Regina defense early, ripping off five quality shots but were unable to find an opening to get on the board first. Then, in the 26th minute, Salve's Hailey Dubbioso collected her own rebound after initially being denied by Tori Paine and was able to sneak it into the netting to put her squad on the board first, 1-0. Gordon continued to control the tempo, putting pressure on the Salve defense, but the score held 1-0 at the half.
- In the 72nd minute, Sarah Sierzenga booted in a corner kick that bounced around in front of the net before a Salve defender attempted to clear it out but instead found Gordon's Savannah Metz who placed it over the outstretched diving hands of Salve's keeper to knot it up at 1-1.
- With just over six minutes remaining in regulation, Gordon's McKenna Feller looped an indefensible free kick from 30 yards out perfectly over Salve's keeper to go on top and secure the eventual 2-1 victory.
