Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Second Half Push Lifts Bears Past Scots In Gordon Classic

In the nightcap of the first day of the Gordon Classic, Gordon College Women's Basketball was topped by the visiting Bears of the Coast Guard Academy, 72-83.

The Fighting Scots' effort was spearheaded by Serianna Anderson and Madison Wynbeek, each notching 14 points while Cara Andreotti and Ami Rivera chipped in 11 each on the night. Additionally, Caleigh Williams made her presence known by booking 12 points and racking up seven rebounds.

For the visitors, Kira Wood and Kyra Hartman led the way with 24 and 18 points, respectively. Jacqueline Ward booked a double double with 13 points and ten boards.

How It Happened
  • In the first quarter, Gordon came out strong, scoring first thanks to a layup from veteran Scot, Madison Wynbeek. The Fighting Scots continued to be aggressive offensively, however the Bears consistently answered back, clawing their way back to a tie multiples times after being down. It wasn't until the score was twelve all when the Scots dug deep to pull ahead 19-12 after a straight seven point run.
  • The next quarter, Rivera got the Scots going when the freshman protege sunk a trio of three-pointers in a row, giving Gordon a 28-16 edge early in the quarter.
  • The Fighting Scots continued to rally thanks to a powerful mix of points from upperclassmen Anderson and Wynbeek who worked together to net three more field goals (35-21) before Coast Guard attempted to cut the deficit. Sophomore rookie Williams wanted to contribute to the rally, slamming down three back to back layups after smothering every rebound that came her way, ending the half with a nine point advantage, 44-35.
  • Returning from the half, the bears retaliated early and often, quickly closing the gap and eventually tying it up 48-48 with just over three minutes left in the quarter. Coast Guard went on to break the tie, ending the quarter with a five point lead (57-52).
  • The Scots were determined to strike back, constantly driving to the net and coming within reach of a tie (56-57). However the Bears continued to push the Fighting Scots, recording a pair of layups along with a three to give them their most drastic lead so far, 64-58. Gordon attempted to close the gap, however it wasn't enough as Coast Guard continued to dominate the final quarter, ultimately defeating the Scots 72-83.
Beyond The Box Score
  • The Fighting Scots have a quick turnaround as the blue and white hit Kanas Court again tomorrow, Saturday November 13 against Oglethorpe at 3 p.m.
  • Gordon had five players in double figures in tonight's contest.
