Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Scots Take Down Petrels, 64-56

The second and final day of the Gordon Classic ended with a bang as Gordon College Women's Basketball defeated the Stormy Petrels of Oglethorpe University 64-56 after an electrifying second half surge.

The Fighting Scots were paced by freshman standout Ami Rivera and upperclassman Serianna Anderson who booked 16 points each. Meanwhile Madison Wynbeek added 11 points to the total tally along with a team high eight rebounds on the evening.

Savannah LeGate was a powerhouse for the visitors, recording 22 points in 17 minutes of action while collecting 13 rebounds for Oglethorpe. Taylor Smith also contributed to the stat sheet with 12 points.

How It Happened
  • After obtaining the initial possession, Oglethorpe got on the board first with a clean layup from Smith. The Scots quickly answered back with a famous Anderson three to give Gordon the lead that they would hold for the remainder of the first. Thanks to a pair of jumpers from Rivera, the quarter ended 18-14 in favor of the Scots.
  • Wynbeek and Anderson started off the second quarter by capitalizing on two free throws each with flawless execution to give the Fighting Scots a six point edge (22-16). The Scots continued to tack onto their lead, finishing the half 33-25 after a last minute classic layup in the paint from hot Scot Wynbeek.
  • Coming back from the half, the Fighting Scots gained their most significant edge (35-25) before eventually giving up their lead and seeing their biggest deficit being down 40-37. Gordon continued to battle back, quickly tying it up (40-40) after Anderson handed it off to Rivera who sunk her second three of the evening. The squads ping-ponged points, but the Scots were able to regain their edge when Cara Andreotti passed it off to classmate Caleigh Williams who netted a layup with seconds to go, bringing the score to 47-45.
  • Gordon continued to pounce, going up 51-45 before the Stormy Petrels eventually obtained their second lead of the game 53-52 with 5:47 on the clock. Refusing to go down, Wynbeek swiftly got the Scots back in the lead with two skillful jumpers in a row each fed by Andreotti to go up 56-53.
  • After dancing around the Petrels, Anderson landed a layup from Rivera to hold Oglethorpe to 56 points for the remainder of the game to give the Fighting Scots their first win of the 2021 season, 64-56.
Beyond The Box Score
  • This marks the third straight game that Ami Rivera recorded double digits to begin her career as a Fighting Scot.
  • The Scots are back in action Thursday, November 18 when they travel to Amherst, Massachusetts to take on the Mammoths of Amherst College for a 7 p.m. tipoff.
