Welcoming the Leopards of Wentworth Institute of Technology for their second Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) matchup this afternoon, Gordon College Men's Basketball pulled off a 61-58 win this evening after a second half push. With today's victory, the Fighting Scots improve to 2-1 overall, while evening out their conference record to 1-1. Meanwhile Wentworth falls to 2-4 overall (0-2 CCC).
Heading the Scots was
Garrett Sattazahn who contributed 16 points, meanwhile teammate
Parker Omslaer followed him up with 12 points and nine rebounds.
For the Leopards,
Kevin Fernandez booked a team-high 18 points, while
Trey Carrier recorded a double-doubled by adding 12 points and collecting 11 rebounds.
How It Happened
- The Leopards raced out to a 13-3 lead in the first five minutes before eventually going up by 14 (25-11) with 7:04 to go in the first half. The Fighting Scots, however, buckled down and chipped away at the deficit cutting it to four, twice, before Wentworth drained a three with 37 ticks left on the clock to take a seven-point lead.
- Smith and Sattazahn hit a pair of baskets to open up the second, trimming Wentworth's lead all the way down to three points. With 12:52 on the clock, Zach Quanico nailed a three to give the Fighting Scots their first lead of the evening (40-39). Both sides would trade points for the next 10 minutes before Sattazahn hit a three to make it a one point game (WIT 50-49 GC). However, the Leopards answered back on their offensive end with a three of their own to widen the gap to four points 20 seconds later.
- With just over five minutes on the clock, Treyton Tebbs hit a layup to tie it up at 53-all. Parker Omslaer continued to keep the Scots hot as the graduate student gave the Scots their second lead of the afternoon (55-53) with a floater. Despite Gordon's lead being short lived as Wentworth sunk a three a few seconds later, the Fighting Scots kept pounding and scored the final six points of the half to come away with the thriller 61-58 victory.
