Game Recap: Softball |

Scots Fall In Season Opener Against ENC

Gordon College Softball returned to the diamond this afternoon hosting Eastern Nazerene College (ENC) in their first non-conference doubleheader where ENC swept the Fighting Scots, 8-0 and 2-0, starting off the Lions' 2021 record at 2-0.

Game One
  • ENC started off strong as Aurora Adams lined a double to left center. Darcy Castro soon hit her teammate in with a single down the left field line. However, the Scots put out their fire as ENC went cold until the top of the fourth where the Lions put another run on the board.
  • The Fighting Scots made an effort to put a score on the board in the fourth inning with a single up the middle by senior Laura Bieren, which was followed up with a double from Lily Rivera. Nevertheless, the Scots were unable to score, leaving two runners on.
  • The Lions' bats started to get hot in the fifth when Rebecca Hayner started the rally with a single up the middle, followed up by teammate Alex Schwenger who ripped a double to advance her to third. Adams stayed hot as she singled up the middle, resulting in two RBIs.
  • The Scots attempted to get back those runs when Kristen Brown started off the bottom of the fifth with a single to right field. Gabby Bergstrom then advanced Brown to second with a single down the left field line. The hits were contagious as freshman Bella Runcie reached first on a hard hit ground ball to second forcing an error and loading up the bases for the Scots. However, the Scots were never able to cross the plate after a fly and ground out.
  • ENC showed no mercy as Yaya Bowden launched the ball over the fence for a solo homerun making it 5-0 in favor of the Lions. Nothing could stop the Lions in the sixth when Schwenger tacked on another run with a double to right center scoring Hayner who singled the at bat prior. Adams continued her hitting streak with a two-run homer scoring both herself and Schwenger.
  • The Scots were cut short since they were unable to retaliate in the bottom of the sixth, ultimately being run-ruled 8-0.
Game Two
  • ENC got off to a quick 1-0 lead as they strung a few hits together eventually scoring Adams with a double from Taylor Brandt
  • The next five innings of the game was a pitcher's duel as neither team was able to cross the plate with only five hits between the Scots and Lions.
  • The Lions took advantage of a pitching change when Brown stepped on the mound and Adrianna Montuya hit a hard grounder up the middle for a single resulting in another run scored for ENC. Brown was able to get out of the inning without any more damage from a fielder's choice and a pop up to short.
  • The Scots started to get their bats going when Laura Bieren led off the bottom of the sixth with a single up the middle, followed by another single from Lily Rivera but the Scots ended the inning scoreless.
  • The Scots were able to get a runner in scoring position in the bottom of the seventh but could not advance as the Lions took game two, 2-0.

Beyond The Box Score
  • The Scots continue non-conference play next weekend as they host Lasell on Saturday, March 20 for another double header with a 12 p.m. start.
  • Gabby Bergstrom booked her first collegiate hit in game one.
