Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Scots Down Lions, 3-1

Tonight the Gordon College Volleyball team hosted the Eastern Nazarene Lions for their senior day. The Scots won the match 3-1 to secure a series sweep and improve to .500 on the season.

The Lions' Rebecca Thorne led with 13 kills, and Samantha Caldwell set up 26 assists. Jessica Caldwell had a team high 11 digs.

For the Fighting Scots, sophomore Val Nilan crushed 14 kills out of the middle, with Jordan Shaduk following close behind with 12. Libero Hayley Robinson led the game with 20 digs and senior Ashlyn Gergins secured 40 assists and a career-high 18 digs.

How it Happened

  • The first set was neck and neck until a kill from Nilan set the Scots up for a four-point run, forcing an ENC timeout. After the break Gordon answered the Lions' sideout with another four-point run, and extended their lead to eight. After a handful of runs on both sides, freshman Eden Bailey hammered one down to secure game point for the Scots, and Nilan sealed the deal with a kill to take the first set 25-17.
  • The Lions came out strong in the second, going up 10-2, until a kill from senior Marla Batson ended their six-point sequence. After a Gordon timeout at 8-17, Shaduk fired away a kill that led to another three points for the Scots. Despite fighting back hard and cutting the lead to three at game point, the Scots dropped the set 21-25.
  • The Scots trailed the whole third set until a pass/kill effort from juniors Rebecca Majeau and Shaduk tied the game up at 12-12. A five-point stretch in the middle of the set gave Gordon a six point edge, but the Lions fought back with a couple points until Shaduk's pair of kills and an error from ENC gave Gordon the 25-18 win.
  • In the final set, Gordon had a forceful start going up 4-0 with a kill from Macie Carroll and an ace from Robinson. Both teams exchanged points until the Scots went up by six with the help of kills from Batson and Carroll once again on the right side. The closest the Lions got after that was five points, as the Scots raged on to take the set 25-16 and secure the win.
