Panthers Narrowly Surpass Scots, 1-0

Box Score Gordon College Field Hockey welcomed the Panthers of Plymouth State University (PSU) this evening at the Brigham Athletic Complex for just their second home contest of the season. The Fighting Scots challenged Plymouth right out of the gate vigorous offense paired with tactical, solid defense that held off the Panthers until the very last quarter where the visitors were able to knock in their first goal and secure the 1-0 win over the Scots.

How It Happened
  • The Scots stepped on the field ready for action, fighting hard for every ball. Senior Cara Goudie headed Gordon's hot first quarter with the first shot on goal for either squad less than three minutes into the game. The eighth minute of play was heart-pounding when Gordon's Anna Rathbun ripped a shot on net but right at the Panthers' keeper. Teammate Allison Mead continued the attack with another forceful shot, this time blocked by Plymouths' brick wall of defenders to keep the blue and white off the board.
  • With less than two minutes left of the first quarter, the Panthers were able to rattle off three shots but failed to send any past the Scots' freshman keeper Ella Gerrard
  • This time it was the Panthers who attempted to gain the advantage early on in the second quarter with a shot ripped from PSU's Jessica Couture, blocked by Gordon's stellar defense. The Scots held strong as the Panthers first shot was their one and only in the second quarter.
  • Returning from the half, Plymouth retaliated with seven shots coming off the sticks of six different Panthers. Nevertheless, neither team was able to get on the board, ending the period 0-0.
  • The last quarter of play was intensified with multiple scoring attempts from the Panthers right from the start. Their aggressive efforts paid off when PSU's Taylor Healey tipped in her first career goal served from classmate Holly Temple to give the Panthers the 1-0 lead.
  • The Fighting Scots battled down to the last minute but were ultimately defeated by their counterparts 1-0.
 Beyond The Box Score
  • The Scots begin Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) play this Saturday, September 18 when they travel to Dudley, Massachusetts to square off against the Nichols Bison at 12 p.m.
