Golden Bears Sweep Scots In CCC Opener

Box Score Gordon College Volleyball was defeated 3-0 by the Western New England Golden Bears in Commonwealth Coast Conference action this evening at the Anthony S. Caprio Alumni Healthful Living Center in Springfield, Massachusetts. Both squads land at .500 after tonight's match with the Fighting Scots at 4-4 and the Golden Bears at 5-5 on the season.

How It Happened
  • Through a flurry of tight lead changes, the Fighting Scots put the pedal to the metal, scoring six straight points to go on top, 21-17 forcing the home team to call a timeout. The break worked in WNE's favor as the Golden Bears crawled back into contention, causing the Scots to call a timeout of their own after locking it up at 21-all. WNE took control of the final tallies to win the first set, 25-21.
  • Both sides were locked in, again recording multiple lead changes before the 10th point of the frame was scored. With the Scots leading 11-10, WNE found their groove, going on a 7-0 run to take a comfortable 17-10 lead. The Golden Bears closed it out down the stretch to take the 2-0 lead after winning the second set by a score of 25-18.
  • The Scots came into the third set hungry and after WNE gained a 3-2 lead, the blue and white settled down to steadily gain control. Midway through the third Valerie Nilan slammed down three straight kills before teammate Joey Keltner served up an ace to give the Scots a 20-14 lead. Using home court to their advantage, WNE did not shy away, pulling together a pair of short streaks to take the third and final set, 25-23 and overall 3-0 win.

Beyond The Box Score
  • The Fighting Scots return to Kanas Court in the Bennett Center on Thursday, September 23 at 7 p.m. against the Bears of Bridgewater State University.
