Howe, Nilan Power Scots To Tri-Match Sweep

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Hosting a tri-match today on Kanas Court, Gordon College Volleyball swept Nichols College in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) play in the early match before pulling off another sweep over Eastern Nazarene in non-conference play. 

Gordon vs. Nichols
  • Back-to-back kills by freshman Annie Murphy capped off an 8-1 emergence from the Fighting Scots to open up the first set. The Scots continued their dominance leading by as many as 10 (21-11), before finishing on top, 25-14 to take the first set.
  • The seventh lead change of the second frame shifted the score in Gordon's favor to make it 13-12. Nichols knotted it up at 14 and then again at 15-all, but Gordon continued to keep the Bison at arm's length. The Scots put up four straight points to widen the gap and secure the eventual 25-19 victory.
  • The Scots raced out to a comfortable 18-5 lead in the third and what would become the final set. Gordon only surrendered three more points to Nichols before taking the 17-point win and overall 3-0 victory.
Gordon vs. ENC
  • Looking to assert their control against former conference rivals, ENC stormed out to a 6-1 lead. The Scots began to fight back and crawl into it, but the Lions continued to maintain their edge. Down 13-10, Gordon registered four consecutive points to take their first lead of the set, 14-13. After a kill from Nilan and two from Joey Keltner, ENC was forced to call a timeout to regroup. The Scots led 19-16 before both squads went point for point to make it 22-20. Gordon finished off the first frame by scoring a trio of points to win 25-20.
  • The second frame was evenly matched, with both sides taking turns going on mini runs before there was a 15-15 stalemate. The Scots steadily began to pull away 22-17 before ENC roared back to tie the score at 23-all. Both teams traded points to make it 24-24 before Gordon buckled down for the final two tallies to win, 26-24.
  • The Scots led 10-6 before ENC took the lead 11-10. ENC looked as though they were going to force a fourth set to stretch their lead to 22-16. However, the Scots were not about to back down, climbing back within a point (22-21). With match point in hand, ENC led 24-21 but the Scots pulled off their grittiest performance of the season by scoring the final four points to take the 26-24 win and overall 3-0 W.
Beyond The Box Score
  • The Scots return to the court on Wednesday, September 29 to host the Leopards of Wentworth at 7 p.m.
  • Kate Howe recorded a career-high 41 assists against ENC, while teammate Valerie Nilan booked a career-high 18 kills.
