Bison Sneak Past Scots In High-Scoring Affair

Gordon College Women's Basketball hit the road this afternoon for an away Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) tilt against the Bison of Nichols College where the Fighting Scots battled through four quarters but were edged by their hosts, 84-79. With the loss the Scots drop to 4-7 on the season and 2-3 in league action.

Madison Wynbeek was unstoppable for the Scots as the junior booked a double-double with a game-high 26 points and 18 rebounds. Rookie Ami Rivera hopped on the double-double train as the guard not only scored 19 points and grabbed 13 rebounds, but also added six assists and four steals in the effort.

Nichols' Abrianna Vazquez netted a team-high 22 points, Summer Klein added 18 points, and Hadley Houghton chipped in 14 points.

How It Happened
  • The Scots were perfect in their first two possessions to race out to a 5-0 lead before the Bison answered back by scoring seven straight to go on top, 7-5. However, the Scots swung the momentum back in their pendulum as the blue and white mirrored Nichols' scoring spree to take a 12-7 advantage. Seven seconds after the Scots had a five-point lead, the Bison surpassed the seven point rut, going on a 12-0 run to go up, 19-12 with 3:21 remaining in the first. After two more minutes of back and forth action, Cara Andreotti netted four points in the final 28 seconds to lock it up at 23-23 after one.
  • In the second quarter, both teams played tight defense, with neither side holding a comfortable lead. Nichols held the early edge for the first five minutes of the frame before the Scots flipped the script and held the lead for the final half of the second to take a 44-42 advantage into the half.
  • After coming out of the break, Wynbeek hit a layup in the paint before the Bison hit a pair from the charity stripe as well as a three pointer to take a one point lead. Michaela Kelley quickly gave the Scots the lead once again, as her layup ignited the Scots' 8-0 effort to go up, 54-47 with just over four minutes to go in the third. Not going away easily, the Bison relied on the three ball and cut the deficit to just three points heading into the final quarter.
  • The Bison knotted it up at 66-66 and never stopped pushing, holding the upper hand for the final seven minutes to eventually secure the 84-79 victory over the Scots.

Beyond The Box Score
  • Junior Madison Wynbeek posted career-high numbers with 26 points and 18 rebounds. Additionally, Wynbeek registered her fourth double-double of the season and second in as many games.
  • Freshman Ami Rivera also recorded a career-high in rebounds (13) and along with her 19 points secured her first collegiate double-double.
  • The Fighting Scots return to action on Monday, January 17 as they travel to face Roger Williams at 5:30 p.m.
