Gordon College Women's Soccer invited the Salve Regina Seahawks this afternoon for their third Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) matchup of the season. The Fighting Scots kicked off homecoming with a bang, shutting out their visitors, 3-0 after outshooting the Seahawks, 21 to five in 90 minutes of action.Â
Senior striker
Calla Ashley spearheaded the Scots' offensive front, scoring a pair of goals both in the first half beforeÂ
Sarah Sierzenga brought the hammer down in the final minutes with a goal of her own while also assisting Ashley on her first goal.
How It Happened
- The Scots set a prompt precedent as they got off to a hot start, firing off three shots before the clock struck 6:05. Just a few minutes later, Gordon's Ashley net her first goal of the season after quickly cutting through the Seahawks thanks to a feed from Sierzenga to finesse one in the top right corner of the net and give the Scots the early 1-0 edge at the 10:39 mark. Gordon continued to pound the net but it wasn't until 23:57 when Ashley penetrated Salve's last line of defense once again to lengthen the Scots' advantage, 2-0 heading into the second half.Â
- The Fighting Scots continued to control the ball, keeping it in the Seahawks' end for the majority of the final 45. With a mere 1:53 left in regulation, Sierzenga added to her squad's tally after her teammate drew out the Seahawks' keeper, allowing the senior to lob it over and perfectly place the ball to the back of the net before Salve's keeper could recover, sealing the 3-0 dominant win.Â
