Gordon College Volleyball traveled to Wellesley this afternoon for a two-game tournament hosted by Babson College. The Fighting Scots started off the day with a 3-1 victory against the Clark University Cougars after
Annie Murphy booked a career-high 18 kills. In the nightcap, the Scots battled the Babson College Beavers where Gordon fought for an extra-point first set but ultimately fell, 0-3.
Annie Murphy spearheaded the Scots with a commanding 18 kills in game one as well as ten total blocks on the day, meanwhile,
Valerie Nilan contributed a total of nine blocks as well as 22 kills in both matches combined.
Gordon v. Cougars
- Clark jumped to an early 8-3 advantage in the first set but it wasn't long until the Scots closed the gap to make it a one-point set (10-11) after a powerful kill from Murphy. However, the Cougars were able to hold tight to their lead, eventually securing the 1-0 game edge (25-22).
- The Fighting Scots drew first blood in the second set thanks to back-to-back kills from Murphy and Nilan (2-0) but soon after the Cougars went on a pair of short runs to bring the score to 9-5 in favor of Clark before Murphy came back to tie it up 11-all by adding another kill to her stat sheet. The squads were neck-and-neck until the Scots finally pulled away to reach match point (24-20) before Clark attempted a comeback to bring the score to 23-24, forcing a Gordon timeout. Right after regrouping, Murphy and Nilan teamed up to put away the second set, 25-23 after a controlling block assist.
- After grabbing a 4-2 edge in the third, Clark went on to retake the lead, 13-9 before the Scots took a timeout to eventually lock it up at 15 before taking the slim lead, 17-16. However, the Cougars soon recovered the edge (21-18) before the Fighting Scots went on a six-point run to go up 24-21 before Kate Howe secured the third set with a forceful kill (25-22).
- Murphy got the Scots going once again in the fourth right before Alexa Quinones served up a pair of aces to give Gordon the 3-0 lead that they would not relinquish, eventually grabbing an eight-point advantage (19-11). The Cougars fought for a fifth set, making it a one-point game (21-22) but the Fighting Scots sealed the 3-1 win (25-21).
Gordon v. Beavers
- The Scots came out firing from all cylinders, quickly securing a 10-7 advantage before Babson flipped the script to go ahead, 21-15. Moments later, Gordon went on a six-point rally to make it even at 21. The squads traded points for the remainder of the first before the Beavers locked in the 1-0 edge with a 28-26 first set victory.
- Babson kept their momentum going into the next set, jumping out to a 19-11 lead. The Fighting Scots attempted to close the gap, coming within four (16-20) but the Beaver's took the second set, 25-18.
- The Beavers continued to score first and not look back, as they won the third and final set, 25-13 to take the 3-0 sweep over the Scots.
Beyond The Box Score
- Annie Murphy earned a career-high 18 kills in the Scots' first game against the Cougars.
- The Fighting Scots hit the court for conference action when they host the Western New England Golden Bears on Kanas Court on Tuesday, October 4 for a 7 p.m. game.
