After two postponements, Gordon College Women's Tennis finally squared off against the Suffolk University Rams at the Brigham Athletic Complex this evening under the lights where the Fighting Scots closed down the courts with a thrilling 5-4 victory over the Rams. With the win, the Fighting Scots earn their first Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) victory of the season.
Abbigail Fournier and
Hannah Hovda secured the first win of the day for the Scots with an 8-5 win in No. 2 doubles and then almost immediately after the duo walked off the court, the action in No. 1 singles ended with another Scot victory thanks to
Annette Kim and
Caroline Helmer.Â
The Fighting Scots opened up singles with a 2-1 edge and quickly found themselves up 4-1 after a pair of commanding wins from Kim (6-1, 6-1)Â and A. Fournier (6-3, 6-2). The Rams began to even out the score, taking wins in No. 6, No. 3, and No. 5 action to lock up the score at 4-4. Then, in a grueling battle on the No. 4 courts, Hovda and her counterpart went head to head and just as the clock struck 10 p.m., Hovda pulled out the victory (3-6, 6-2, 10-6) to give her squad 5-4 win.
Gordon returns to action again tomorrow to host the Curry College Colonels at 3:30 p.m.
