Shepherd, Wright Net Two Apiece In 4-3 Win Over Leopards

Gordon College Men's Soccer and the Wentworth Leopards went head to head on Sweeney Field in Boston this afternoon and after 90 minutes of action, two Fighting Scots doubled up on goals to to secure the 4-3 conference victory.

How It Happened
  • The Fighting Scots wasted no time getting on the board, as just 3:21 after the first whistle blew, Isaac Bennett threw the ball in to Nathan Starzl who headed it directly to the feet of Benji Wright who finished it in the lower left corner to take the initial 1-0 lead. However, two minutes and and five seconds later, the Leopards retaliated with a direct kick goal of their own.
  • Both sides battled for control until Gordon's Ian Shepherd stealthily dribbled through Wentworth's wall of defense before finding the back of the net to give the Scots a one-goal edge at the 30:57 mark (2-1). The Fighting Scots stayed hot as Wright followed up his teammate with another goal after beating Wentworth's keeper out in a one versus one situation thanks to a feed from Adrian Chiang to lengthen Gordon's advantage to two before the clock hit zero.
  • The Leopards came out hungry for a goal as they capitalized on a penalty kick inside the box to close the gap, 2-3 just 22 seconds into the new half. Both teams attempted to score again as Gordon out shot the Leopards nine to six before Shepherd booked his second goal of the afternoon after a turnover to give his squad a more comfortable lead, 4-2. However, Wentworth didn't go down easy as they were able to book a last minute goal (89:12) after heading the ball to the empty left side of the net to come within one but the Scots held tight for the remaining 48 seconds to secure the 4-3 victory.
