Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Scots Secure CCC Regular Season Title With Thrilling Victory Over Gulls On Senior Day

In celebration of their seniors, Gordon College Volleyball put on a tri-match as they hosted the Conference undefeated Endicott College Gulls before facing the Plymouth State University (PSU) Panthers for a non-conference matchup to conclude their regular season games. The Fighting Scots started off with a bang against the Gulls, after barely dropping the first set (21-25) Gordon came back to crush the next three sets (25-16, 25-15, 25-19) to take the 3-1 victory and hand Endicott their first CCC loss of the season. Next, the Fighting Scots battled through five back and forth sets against the Panthers but ultimately fell, 2-3.

Valerie Nilan, Annie Murphy and Jordan Shaduk guided the Scots in their huge conference win against the Gulls, each collecting 14 kills in the effort, meanwhile, Kate Howe booked a whopping 49 assists. The killer trio also led Gordon in game two with 15, 13, and 12 kills, respectively while Howe added another 47 assists to her stat sheet.

Gordon v. Endicott
  • After the Scots grabbed the first point of the game, both teams traded points by twos until the Gulls took their biggest lead of the set, 17-14. However, Gordon quickly answered back with a Murphy kill and a service ace from Macie Carroll to lock it up at 19. Endicott refused to stay silent as they regained their advantage, 23-19 before the Scots battled point for point to come back but it wasn't enough as the Gulls took the first set, 25-21.
  • Gordon jumped out to a lengthy lead right away with a mix of kills from Joey Keltner (2) and Nilan along with a pair of aces from Alexa Quinones before Howe brought her squad to double-digits with a sneaky kill (10-2). The Gulls attempted to close the gap eventually reaching a five-point deficit (10-15) but the Scots kept chugging along, eventually taking a commanding 10-point advantage (23-13) with the match point in sight after a Nilan kill followed by an ace from Keltner moments before closing out the second set, 25-16 thanks to a towering kill from Shaduk.
  • The Scots continued to command the court, taking a 10-point lead (20-10) that they would not relinquish to secure the third set, 25-15.
  • Taking their momentum into the fourth set, the Fighting Scots went on a trio of three-point runs to climb to a 9-3 edge before Carroll eventually brought the Scots to their final match point with an earth-shattering kill (24-18). Moments later, Murphy shook the crowd with her 14th kill of the night to lock in the 25-19 set win and overall 3-1 victory to steal the number one Conference spot.
Gordon v. Plymouth
  • After ping-ponging points, the Panthers finally gained a sizable lead after a four-point run (13-9) but the Fighting Scots retaliated to tie it up 18-all after a Shaduk kill before taking the lead, 19-18. Nilan stayed hot, booking back to back kills to bring the score to 23-21. However, PSU battled back to force extra points (24-23) but the Scots powered through to seal the first set, 28-26.
  • In the second set, the Panthers sprung to a 18-7 lead before the Fighting Scots took time to regroup to shrink their deficit to five (15-20) however it wasn't enough as PSU evened out the score 1-1 with a 25-19 win.
  • Keltner got the Scots going in the third set with a service ace, catalyzing an eight-point run for her squad including five kills in a row before book ending the run with another ace of her own. However, the Panthers slowly clawed their way back to an even score at 20-20 but the Scots refused to go give up their edge, scoring five straight points to secure their second set win, 25-20.
  • PSU bounced back to gain a 21-9 lead before the Scots closed the gap (16-22) but it wasn't enough as the Panthers took the fourth set, 25-16 to force a fifth and final set.
  • The Panthers stayed hot early in the fifth, recording six straight points before the Scots could get on the board, eventually coming within two (8-10) but the Panthers pressed on to lock in the final set 15-11.
