Scots Cap Off 2022 Campaign In CCC Finals

For the first time in two decades, Gordon College Volleyball hosted the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) Championship game as they welcomed the No. 2 Endicott Gulls to Kanas Court to fight for the gold. The No. 1 Fighting Scots battled their cross-town rivals for the title but the Gulls sought revenge from their 3-1 loss exactly a week ago to clinch the final CCC victory of the season, 3-0.

Senior Valerie Nilan led the Scots for the second game in a row with 13 kills, followed by Jordan Shaduk and Annie Murphy who recorded nine and seven kills, respectively.

Amanda Gilbert guided the Gulls with 14 kills followed by Sophie Breitenbach who booked 10, meanwhile, Lauren McGrath dished out 35 assists.

How It Happened
  • Nilan got the Scots on the board first thanks to a towering kill, gaining a 2-0 edge before the Gulls retaliated with a strong seven-point run. The Fighting Scots chipped away to close the gap, eventually knotting it up at 14-14 but the Gulls refused to give up their lead, going up by four (20-16) before a trio of kills from Murphy, Schneider, and Nilan brought them within one (19-20). However, Endicott pressed on, booking five points broken up by one Scot tally to close out the set, 25-20.
  • In the second set, the Gulls jumped out to a 4-1 advantage but Gordon quickly battled back to grab their first lead of the game, 6-4 topped off by a sneaky kill from Schneider. However, twin kills from the Gulls locked it up at six-all before the squads traded points until Endicott regained their edge, 12-10. Moments later, the score was tied up at 12 thanks to the hot hand of Schneider but the Gulls answered back with a short five-point rally (17-12) to attain a sizable lead that they would not relinquish, to head into the third set with a 2-0 lead (25-18).
  • After Murphy booked the first point of the set for her squad, Endicott went on top 3-1 before the blue and white evened it out 3-3 after a Nilan kill followed by a perfectly placed ace from Alexa Quinones. The Gulls started to pull away, tacking on a three-point edge (9-6) before a Kate Howe service ace gave the Fighting Scots the one-point lead, 10-9. After trading a duo of points, back to back kills from Nilan and Joey Keltner brought the score to 16-13, forcing an Endicott timeout which the Gulls used to their advantage, scoring four points in a row to take back their slight advantage (17-16). But the Scots refused to go down as a pair of kills from Nilan gave her squad their 20th point of the set (20-17). However, the Gulls refused to lose a single set in postseason action, taking the eventual 3-0 win to secure the championship trophy after a 25-22 final set win.
