Coming off of a high from their first Conference victory this past Saturday, Gordon College Women's Basketball traveled to Newport, Rhode Island this afternoon to square up against the Seahawks of Salve Regina for a Commonwealth Coast Conference match-up where the Fighting Scots and Seahawks battled to the very last minutes before Salve took the eventual 52-47 win.
Ami Rivera and
Madison Wynbeek led the Scots with 10 points a piece along with eight and seven rebounds, respectively, while
Isabella Rivera chipped in nine points in the effort.
For the hosts,
Amanda Folan and
Briana Neary guided their squad to victory with 16 points each.
How It Happened
- After 2:33 minutes of scoreless action, the Seahawks were the first to get on the board with a layup before sharp-shooter A. Rivera sunk one from three-point land to take the initial lead. However, the Seahawks scored the next five points to go ahead 7-3 with 5:13 remaining in the first. The Fighting Scots were able to chip away thanks to back to back jumpers from Sydney Noyes and A. Rivera to regain the narrow edge (8-7). The squads traded baskets and the lead before ending the first 10-9 in favor of Gordon.
- Wynbeek kicked off the second quarter with a jumper moments before A. Rivera followed her up with another to lengthen the Scots' lead to five but Salve was able to knot it up at 14-all and again at the 1:50 mark (17-17). However, the Scots were determined to keep their advantage heading into the half, 21-17 sealed up by an I. Rivera layup in the last ten seconds.
- I. Rivera started off the next period the way she ended the last, making the first layup of the quarter moments before rookie Naomi Nicholson hit a three to give the Scots their biggest lead of the game, 26-19. The Seahawks attempted to close the gap, eventually locking up the score at 33 with 2:04 to go before taking the lead to head into the final frame, 38-37.
- Noyes quickly tied up the game after sinking one from the charity stripe just 11 seconds into the last quarter. The teams battled back and forth, trading the advantage until a three-pointer from Salve at the 2:40 mark gave the Seahawks a three-point edge that they would soon use to propel them to an eventual 52-47 win.
