Following yesterday's come back win against the Curry College Colonels in the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) First Round game, No. 7-seeded Gordon College Men's Basketball had a quick turnaround as they traveled to Newport, Rhode Island today to battle the No. 2-seeded Seahawks of Salve Regina for the CCC Quarterfinal Round where the Fighting Scots battled for 40 min but ultimately fell to their hosts, 57-78.
Leading the Scots tonight was
Bryce Smith who netted 13 points, followed by
Parker Omslaer who capped off his career by contributing 12 points, bringing down seven rebounds, and swatting away four blocks.
For the Seahawks, All-Conference First Team selection,
Mikey Spencer guided his squad to the Semifinals after booking 22 points. Not far behind him was
Cameron Collins who added 19 points into the mix in addition to grabbing eight boards. Meanwhile,
Kevin Kelly helped the Seahawks out with a double-double as he recorded 17 points and 11 rebounds.
How It Happened
- The Seahawks were able to hold the Fighting Scots at bay for the first five minutes of play as they went on a 14-point run before Gordon's Smith got the Scots on the board with a jumper. However, Salve didn't let up, eventually earning a 20-point lead after a three from Spencer at 13:38 (22-2). The Scots attempted to cut the deficit in the remainder of the half, shrinking Salve's lead to 11 moments before the Seahawks hit one from downtown to close out the first, 40-26.
- Coming back from the half, both teams traded off points, but Salve was able to maintain their advantage. The Fighting Scots came close to breaking the double-digit lead thanks to a layup from Omslaer to come within ten (45-55) with 9:30 remaining, however, the Seahawks' advantage was too great as they ended up taking the eventual 78-57 win over the Scots to advance to the Semifinal round.
