Scots Drop Two On Spring Break Trip

After a day of rest, Gordon College Softball returned to Hancock Park where they faced the Dominican University Stars and the Lions of Penn State Altoona where the Fighting Scots ultimately fell to both squads, 5-8 and 5-7.

Gordon vs. Dominican
  • In their first matchup of the day, the Fighting Scots battled back to tie it up at 2-2 in the third thanks to a warning track sacrifice fly from Lily Rivera to bring in two runs. However, the Stars retaliated as soon as they got back up to the plate, scoring five runs to regain the advantage, 7-2.
  • In the fourth, the Scots started to chip away, cutting their deficit to four after a hard hit ground ball from Mara Little to bring home Gabby Hunt (7-3). The score remained the same until the sixth when Gordon's L. Rivera flirted with the outfield fence once again as she tacked on another run with a deep sacrifice fly to bring the score to 7-4.
  • Next, Dominican earned an insurance run after a perfectly placed hit to the right center grass to extend their lead, 8-4. With one more chance to score, Ami Rivera led the Fighting Scots off by rocketing one over the fence, however, it wasn't enough as the Scots took the eventual 8-5 loss.
Gordon vs. Penn State Altoona
  • After holding the Lions scoreless in a quick first half inning, Gordon got the bats going right away after Karissa Hatchell started the Scots off with a double to left field. Two batters later, A. Rivera laced one to right center, scoring Hatchell to grab an early 1-0 advantage. The Scots kept the Lions off the bases when they returned to the field in the second thanks to a speedy, one-two-three inning. Gordon made sure to tack on another run in the bottom of the second to extend their edge to 2-0.
  • However, the Lions brought out the hot bats in the top of the third as they were able to put three up on the board after back to back shots to the grass to go up, 3-2. But the Fighting Scots didn't let up, as A. Rivera got the Scots rolling again with a monstrous triple down the right field line to put her in scoring position early on in the third. The next batter up, Arianna Ramsaran, drove in A. Rivera with a bomb hit to right field to knot it up at 3-3.
  • Both squads held each other scoreless until the fifth when the Lions busted it open, scoring four runs off of four hits to widen the gap, 7-3. In the remaining innings, the Scots were able to put up two more runs, however the Lions ultimately defeated Gordon, 7-5.
Beyond The Box Score
  • Freshman Ami Rivera recorded her first collegiate homerun against Dominican this afternoon.
  • The Fighting Scots hit the field again tomorrow, March 10 to square up against Ursinus College at 9:15 a.m.
