Scots Snatch One From Bison In Conference Doubleheader

Traveling to Dudley, Massachusetts this morning, Gordon College softball had a quick turn around as they battled the Nichols College Bison for their second conference doubleheader of the week. The Fighting Scots started off the day with a win after a back and forth duel where the Scots came out on top, 5-4. In game two, Nichols turned the tables as they came out with the narrow win this time, 5-4.

Game One
  • The Scots got their bats going early on as Lily Rivera and Arianna Ramsaran booked back to back singles through the left side but were left stranded on the bags. After giving up two hits, the Bison answered back with three hits of their own, resulting in an early 2-0 lead after the first. Next, Gordon's Emily Peterson got the Fighting Scots on the board after a sacrifice hit to short to score Karissa Hatchell (1-2).
  • Starting pitcher, Mara Little, held Nichols to just one hit for the next two innings until the Bison added another run to their edge after a three-hit fourth inning (3-1). However Gordon's hot hitter, Ramsaran, launched her third homer in 10 days to knot it up at three-all. After shutting down the Bison in the field with a double play, the Scots continued to rally in the batter's box, taking a 5-3 advantage thanks to a Gabby Hunt double before Little helped herself out with a sacrifice fly.
  • In their final chance to score, Nichols attempted to come back as they were able to string together four hits, making it a one-run game, but Little denied the last Bison a base as she showed off her cat-like reflexes to snag the last out and secure the slender 5-4 victory.
Game Two
  • With two outs in the bottom of the first, the Bison got on the board early after a double, scoring Ally Brown who was on first after drawing a walk. But the Fighting Scots immediately got the run back to tie the game up, 1-1 thanks to a Hatchell double to left center to score Ami Rivera who singled up the middle the previous at bat. However, the Bison retaliated in their next ups, regaining the one-run edge after a lead off homer.
  • Not to be outdone, Peterson started off the third by beating out a base hit to the second baseman moments before L. Rivera evened out the score with a rope to the opposite side to score Peterson (2-2). Next, L. Rivera found herself on second after advancing on a wild pitch before Ramsaran kept the Scots' momentum going by trading places with her classmate after launching a bomb to center to give Gordon the 3-2 edge. After a flawless inning in the field for both teams, Nichols busted out the bats in the fourth to retake the lead, 5-3 after a bases clearing double off the bat of Samantha Kostek
  • In the next inning, the Scots attempted to close the gap as Emma DuBois lined a single to center to cut the deficit to one (4-5). Even though the Fighting Scots outhit the Bison 2-0 in the remaining innings, it wasn't enough to generate a run as they took the eventual 4-5 loss.
Beyond The Box Score
  • The Scots have split with the last four Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) teams they have played.
  • In Gordon's past six conference games, Arianna Ramsaran has hit three home runs.
  • Graduate students Lily Rivera and Arianna Ramsaran and freshman Isabella Rivera have safely reached first in the last five matchups.
  • The Fighting Scots take a break from conference play when they travel to Quincy, Mass. to square up against ex-conference rivals Eastern Nazarene College on Tuesday, April 27 at 3 p.m.
