Scots' Bats Come Alive In 27 Hit Sweep Against Lions

Taking a break from conference play this afternoon, Gordon College Softball traveled to Quincy, Massachusetts to face ex-conference rivals Eastern Nazarene College (ENC) where the Fighting Scots added two wins to their record after defeating the Lions, 14-2 and 4-3.

Game One
  • The Scots busted out the bats early on as Isabella Rivera led off the game with a towering double to left before fellow rookie Emily Peterson moved her 60 feet from the plate thanks to a sacrifice bunt. The next batter up, Lily Rivera did her job as she scored her sister after a hard hit groundout to short. However, the Lions were able to even out the score (1-1) as the leadoff walk eventually came around to cross the plate.
  • In the second, the Fighting Scots took the lead once again after starting pitcher Mara Little helped herself with a single to the opposite side, bringing home two runs to take the 3-1 advantage. The Scots were able to keep ENC off the bases in the home half of the second, recording three straight outs topped off by a Little strikeout.
  • It was a pitcher's duel until the top of the fifth when I. Rivera sparked another hitting parade after singling off of a bunt. Peterson followed up with another bunt single to find herself on first while moving I. Rivera to third before crossing the plate after taking advantage of a first and third throw down. The next batter up, L. Rivera, kept the Scots' scoring streak alive with a two-run shot over the fence to take the five-run lead, 6-1 heading into the sixth. In the bottom half of the sixth, the Lions were able to double their score to cut their deficit to four after mustering up two hits (2-6).
  • Unsatisfied with their lead, the Fighting Scots answered back with eight runs after stringing together eight hits to earn a commanding 14-2 lead before shutting down the Lions in their last at bats to secure the dominant win.
Game Two
  • Gordon kept their bats going as I. Rivera opened up the second matchup with another base hit to get the Scots rolling. Not long after, Arianna Ramsaran singled up the middle to bring home the Fighting Scots' first run. After shutting down the side, the Scots added to their advantage in the second during a two out rally catalyzed by a Little double laced to right center. Moments later, Peterson added an RBI to her stat sheet thanks to a single down the right field line to give the Scots a two-run edge.
  • However, ENC was able to make it a one-run game after stringing together two hits to score their first run (1-2). The Fighting Scots quickly regained their two-run advantage after senior Emma DuBois roped one up the middle to score L. Rivera. Meanwhile, Sierra Ricci stayed dominant in the circle as she only allowed three hits before the Lions' bats started to get hot in the bottom of the seventh as they were able to knot up the game, 3-3 forcing an extra inning with one out to go.
  • The Fighting Scots promptly capitalized on the international tiebreak rule as Karissa Hatchell stirred up some commotion to reach first thanks to a Lion miscue, which Ami Rivera used to reach home for the go ahead run. The Scots went back out on the field and shut down the first two batters before Ricci sat the last batter down with a strikeout to lock in the 4-3 extra-inning victory and secure the sweep.
Beyond The Box Score
  • After an outstanding five RBI in game one, Lily Rivera has tied Gordon's Season RBI record with 35 (previously set in 1995 by Jaimee Smith.
  • The Fighting Scots return to the diamond on Friday, April 29 when they host the Curry College Colonels for a conference twin bill starting at 3 p.m.
