Gordon College Women's Lacrosse took the field this afternoon for their final Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) battle of the season at the Brigham Athletic Complex against the Salve Regina University (SRU) Seahawks where the Fighting Scots celebrated their three seniors before taking a 17-5 loss.
For the Scots,
Abigail Mansfield spearheaded her squad once again with three goals while
Alexis LaPia and
Kaitlyn Mini each chipped in a goal. Meanwhile in goal,
Annabel Christenson recorded 13 saves in the effort. Additionally,
Savannah Metz did her part on defense with three caused turnovers and a ground ball.
The visitors were led by
Nicole Smith who scored eight times followed by
Samantha Moleti who added three to the Seahawks' tally.
How It Happened
- The Seahawks started off the game with three goals before Mansfield got the Scots on the board at the 10:12 mark after lacing one past Salve's keeper thanks to a
Hailey Beling feed (1-3). However, the Seahawks went on score six more in the remainder of the first to head into the second, 9-1.
- In the second quarter, SRU opened up with two goals before Gordon's LaPia found the back of the net to close the gap, 2-11. After the Seahawks tacked on two more in the second, the Fighting Scots drew first blood coming back from the half with a quick goal from Mini at the 13:21 mark (13-3). SRU went on to explode with a trio of goals to head into the final frame, 16-3.
- After holding the Seahawks scoreless in the first eight minutes of the last quarter, Mansfield scored the Scots' fourth goal of the afternoon to bring the score to 4-16 before SRU added one to their advantage. With 25 seconds remaining in regulation, Mansfield capped off her career with the last play of the contest after taking advantage of a free position shot to give the Scots their fifth goal of the afternoon for her 102nd career point.
