After kicking off Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action yesterday, Gordon College Softball hosted* their first CCC game this afternoon when they invited the Suffolk University Rams to compete in a doubleheader that was postponed from Friday, April 1. After falling behind by one run early in the first inning in game one, the Fighting Scots battled in the remaining six but were unable to cross the plate and took the 1-0 loss. In the next game, after being down 0-4 the Scots were able to get their bats going in the sixth to come within one, however, Suffolk ultimately locked in the sweep with another tight win, 4-3.
Game One
- In the top of the first, Gordon's lead off slapper Emily Peterson started the game off for the Scots with a single to the shortstop before turning on her wheels to steal second and put herself in scoring position but was left stranded after Suffolk got a strikeout to end the inning. Suffolk took advantage of their first inning ups when Caitlin Murphy tripled to left center to bring her within 60 feet of home. The Rams wasted no time getting on the board as Murphy was hit in the next at bat after a grounder to the opposite side.
- Starting pitcher, Mara Little, held Suffolk to just one hit in the next five innings while keeping the Rams scoreless for the remainder of the game. In the batter's box, the Scots answered back with three singles but were unable to string them together, eventually taking the close 0-1 loss.
Game Two
- The Rams were able to score first again in the second round of action, once again scoring Murphy to take an early 1-0 edge after one. Suffolk kept their momentum going in the next inning as they tacked on three runs off of three hits to take a more comfortable 4-0 lead over the Scots. It wasn't until the top of the sixth when Lily Rivera made it a one-run game after a three RBI shot over the left field fence to earn the Fighting Scots' first runs of the day (3-4).
- After holding the Rams to a single hit in the sixth, Gordon attempted to close the gap in their final at bats, however, it wasn't enough as Suffolk snatched their second narrow win of the series, 4-3.
Beyond The Box Score
- Lily Rivera has booked at least one double against each of the Scots' last five opponents.
- The Fighting Scots have a short break from conference action as they are set to host the Worcester State Lancers on Tuesday, April 5 at 3 p.m.
