No. 6 Rams End Scots' 2022 Campaign In CCC Playoffs

After earning their way into postseason action thanks to a comeback win this past Saturday against Roger Williams (No. 3), Gordon College Baseball traveled to Boston this afternoon where they squared up against the No. 6 seeded Suffolk University Rams for the initial play-in round of the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) playoffs. After an intense nine-inning battle, the Rams eventually put an end to the Fighting Scots' 2022 season, handing Gordon the 3-9 loss.

How It Happened
  • The Scots made sure to take advantage of their first at bats as CJ Demers got his squad on the board after ripping a base hit to center, scoring teammate Robert Dunkle. However, once the Rams got a chance to hack at the plate they immediately answered back with the go-ahead run to take a narrow 2-1 edge after one. In the second, an early Scot double play held the Rams at bay before a two-out solo shot doubled Suffolk's lead to two (3-1). The Rams continued their short burst scoring spree, tacking on one more run to head into the fourth inning, 4-1.
  • Gordon's Josh Popovitch stirred the pot as he led off the fourth reaching first after a Ram miscue before McIntyre smashed a single down the right field line. The next batter up, Shane Demers kept the Scots' momentum going as he found himself on first after forcing another miscue in the infield to drive home McIntyre. Not long after, the Fighting Scots made it a one-run game thanks to smart base running to bring the score to 3-4. However, the Rams regained a two-run lead in the home half of the fourth thanks to a triple to right center before forcing a pitching change (5-3).
  • The Fighting Scots attempted to cut the deficit as they strung together three hits in the fifth, but it wasn't enough to cross the plate. Meanwhile on the rubber, senior Hunter Routhier held the Rams hitless for two straight innings while adding three strikeouts to his stat sheet before the Rams broke open in the seventh, pouring on the runs to grab a commanding 8-3 lead. Suffolk was able to add to their advantage one more time before taking the eventual 9-3 win over the Scots.
