After earning a victory in their first Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) matchup of the young season this week, Gordon College Volleyball took a break from league action to square off against the Bridgewater State Bears on the road this evening. The Fighting Scots took care of business with the 3-0 sweep.
For the Scots, Jordan Shauk led the way with 12 kills, while
Joey Keltner and
Valerie Nilan added 11 kills a piece. Additionally,
Kate Howe recorded 30 assists and
Nikki Batson had 14 digs.
How It Happened
- Both sides took their fair share of leads early, including eight ties before the Fighting Scots began to pull away midway through the set (17-13). The Bears were only able to tack on two more points as the Scots stepped in the driver's seat en route to the 25-15 win.
- The second frame mirrored the first as the Scots and Bears went point for point early before the home team looked to take the edge as the Bears went on top, 15-10. However, the Scots continued to fight back and came within one (15-16) after a trio of kills from Nilan in a Scots 4-0 span. Wren Worth locked it up at 17-all with an ace but the Bears quickly took the next point to regain the lead. After two separate 4-0 streaks by each side, Bridgewater led, 23-22 before going ahead, 24-23. The Fighting Scots got the last say, scoring a pair of points to win, 26-24.
- Keeping with the same scoring theme, the third set saw a lot of back and forth, bringing the score to 23-23. Then, Gordon took the lead thanks to a Shaduk kill but the Bears retaliated with two points (25-24). The Scots, however, again did their job, scoring three straight points to secure the 27-25 win and 3-0 sweep.
