Gordon College Women's Volleyball traveled to Henniker, New Hampshire this afternoon to square up against the New England College (NEC) Pilgrims. After crushing the Pilgrims in the first set to gain an early edge, the Fighting Scots battled through five sets but eventually fell, 2-3.Â
How It Happened
- After both squads ping-ponged points, the Scots broke it open in the first set with an eight-point run broken up by one NEC point to take the commanding 17-6 lead before securing the first set, 25-14.Â
- In the second set, the Pilgrims and Scots battled point for point until the score was knotted up at 12 when NEC began to pull away and take the 18-14 lead. However, a trio of points thanks to kills from Annie Murphy and Joey Keltner closed the gap to a one-point set (18-19) but it wasn't enough as the Pilgrims powered through to grab the second set, 25-19.Â
- With the sets tied 1-1, the Fighting Scots came out hot, jumping to an early 10-6 lead. Despite the Pilgrims attempt to cut the deficit, Gordon continued to command the court, holding the lead throughout the remainder of the set to ultimately win, 25-22.Â
- Emily Schneider swung the momentum in favor of the Scots opening up the fourth set with a towering block, however shortly after, NEC strung together points to take a 17-8 lead. It wasn't until the Pilgrims grabbed a double-digit lead (22-12) when the Scots started to climb back to a three-point deficit (19-22) but NEC was able to seal the set, 25-21 and tie up the game 2-2 forcing a fith set.
- In the final set, the Pilgrims swiftly earned a 6-1 lead and never looked back, taking the 15-10 win to lock in the narrow 3-2 victory over the Scots.
