Scots' Hot Start Stumbles Rams In 68-56 Victory

Gordon College Women's Basketball returned to their home court this afternoon as they welcomed Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) foe Suffolk University on Kanas Court. The Fighting Scots fed off the high energy of a packed house to take down the Rams, 68-56.

Madison Wynbeek led the way for the Scots with 19 points and 14 boards, Serianna Anderson also had a double-double with 13 rebounds and 10 points, while Isabella Rivera and Ami Rivera each tacked on 13 in the win.

For the visitors, Madi Mahoney had 17 points, Maddie Stewart chipped in 15 points while grabbing 11 rebounds, and Katie Kirsch added 10 points.

How It Happened
  • The Fighting Scots erupted in the first as the blue and white used a 15-2 run to go on top, 20-4 with 1:26 to go in the frame. After being held scoreless for five minutes of action, Suffolk ended the quarter with a three to bring the score to 20-7 in favor of Gordon.
  • Suffolk scored their final points in the second at the 6:16 mark while the Scots netted the next 12 points to widen the gape to 34-13 at halftime.
  • A three-pointer from Anderson gave the Scots a 25-point lead with just over two minutes into the third quarter (40-15), but the Rams put their heads down to score 23 more points in the frame to cut the deficit to just 13 points heading into the final quarter of action.
  • A. Rivera opened up the fourth with a shot from three-point land to continue to ignite the crowd and make a statement in the opening seconds (54-38). However, the Rams continued to fight, as they trimmed the deficit to single digits (nine) for the first time since the first quarter.
  • The visitors hit another jumper to make it a seven-point game, but senior captain Wynbeek put the team on her back to score the bruise and the bucket before knocking in another layup to stretch her squad's advantage to 12 points with 1:05 on the clock.
  • Nicholson and Lomonaco combined to drain three shots from the charity stripe in the closing seconds as the Fighting Scots secured the 68-56 win over the Rams.
Beyond The Box Score
  • Serianna Anderson booked a double-double for the second straight game.
  • Madison Wynbeek collected her eighth double-double of the season.
  • Next up for the Fighting Scots is a game one of their two-game road stint, as they travel to Springfield, Mass. for a conference contest against the Golden Bears of Western New England on Wednesday, January 18 at 5:30 p.m.
