After a 2-0 week last week, Gordon College Women's Basketball continued their streak in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) play as they traveled to Springfield, Massachusetts this afternoon to face the Western New England (WNE) Golden Bears. After battling back in the second quarter to make it a one-point game heading into the break (25-26), the Fighting Scots turned on the thrusters to pull ahead and eventually take the 58-50 CCC victory.Â
Ami Rivera continued to stay hot for the Scots, earning a game-high 21 points whileÂ
Madison Wynbeek kept her double-double run alive with 18 points and 11 rebounds, followed by fellow seniorÂ
Serianna Anderson who added another 10 points in the comeback effort.
For the Golden Bears, Emma Kahn led her squad with 11 points followed by Caitlyn Hunt and Colleen Furlong who recorded eight and seven points, respectively.Â
How It Happened
- WNE jumped out to a nine-point lead at the 3:54 mark (11-2) but the Fighting Scots refused to be in a double-digit deficit as not long after, Anderson hit one from downtown to cut the gap to six before ending the first quarter, 9-18.Â
- The Golden Bears continued to tack onto their lead, opening up the second frame with a jumper before the Scots slowly chipped away to shrink WNE's edge thanks to an A. Rivera three which was followed up with a Wynbeek layup to come within three (21-24) with 2:48 on the clock. After over two minutes of a standstill, Wynbeek hit a jumper to head into the second half down by one (25-26).
- Both squads fought for the first basket until WNE opened up with a three to extend their advantage to four before the conference rivals went basket for basket until the Scots earned their first edge of the game after a layup from A. Rivera brought the score to 32-31 with 6:08 remaining in the third. It wasn't until almost two minutes later that the Golden Bears were able to retake the narrow one-point lead (33-32) before Hannah Lomonaco gave the Scots the go-ahead basket. With the clock ticking down, Gordon extended their lead to three but WNE was able to get a shot off in the final second of the third to head into the final frame, 41-40.Â
- In the fourth quarter, the teams traded advantages until Wynbeek added three points to the Scots' score to break the tie and go ahead, 46-43. The Golden Bears attempted to shrink the deficit but the blue and white refused to relinquish their hard earned edge, eventually grabbing an 11-point lead (56-45) with 1:59 left in regulation.Â
