Seventh Inning Rally Boosts Scots Over Vikings, 9-3

Gordon College Softball ventured to Salem this evening for a non-conference double header against the Salem State Vikings where the Fighting Scots fell to the Vikings in the first match-up before busting out their bats to spark a seventh inning rally in the nightcap to take the 9-3 victory.

Game One
  • After almost three innings of scoreless action, the Vikings broke out their bats in the bottom of the third to take a slight 1-0 edge thanks to an extra-base hit. Salem continued their momentum into the fourth as they were able to tack on three more runs off of four hits to bring the score to 4-0.
  • Gina Terrazzano attempted to get the Fighting Scots going in their last ups with a two-out rally single to left, but it wasn't enough to propel her squad as the Scots took the eventual 0-4 loss.
Game Two
  • The Scots made sure to get on the board first this time as an Emily Peterson slap single up the middle drove home Terrazzano to give Gordon the early 1-0 advantage in the second. In the third, Gordon continued to pass the bat rounding up a four hit rally to bring the score to 3-0.
  • Starting pitcher Emily Graham kept the Vikings to two hits in the following innings before Salem was able to bring home three runs of their own in the sixth frame thanks to a homerun a batter before Graham sat the last batter down with a strikeout swinging to hold the score at three-all.
  • The Fighting Scots were determined to get those runs back and more in their final offensive opportunity as rookie Abby Murray catalyzed a Scot hitting spree with a single before she scored on a fielder's choice after being moved over by a Peterson bunt single. After reclaiming the edge, the Scots continued to explode out of the box while capitalizing on a few Viking miscues to take a more comfortable 9-3 lead. With three outs in the field to go, Graham shut down three batters in a row with three ground outs to seal the 9-3 overpowering win.
Beyond The Box Score
  • Freshman Emily Graham had a career-high five strikeouts in game two.
  • The Fighting Scots commence Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) play this Friday, March 31 when they travel to Springfield, Mass. to play the Western New England Golden Bears at 2:30 p.m. for a twin bill.
