Scots Edge Out Bobcats, 4-3

After a day break from the diamond, Gordon College Softball returned to the DiamondPlex in Winter Haven, Florida where they first fell to the Thomas College Terriers 4-5 after a late Terrier rally before the Fighting Scots battled back to beat the Bobcats of Pitt-Greensburg, 4-3 in the final inning.

Gordon v. Thomas
  • Both teams were solid in the field, as the Scots were only able to record 2 hits to Thomas' one in the first three innings. It wasn't until the top of the fourth when the Fighting Scots got on the board after an Ami Rivera single catalyzed two Terrier miscues to give Gordon the 1-0 edge. However, Thomas earned the run back in the home half of the fourth to even out the score at one-all heading into the fifth.
  • In the next inning, the Fighting Scots grabbed the lead again with a Mara Little line drive single up the middle to score Gina Terrazzano and retake the 2-1 advantage. Thomas was able to get two runners on but Little shut the Terriers down in the circle, finishing the inning with a swinging strike out.
  • The Scots stayed hot at the plate in the sixth, as A. Rivera set the tone for the inning with a laser double down the right field line before Terrazzano did the same a few batters later to bring home two Scots and double their tally to four (4-1). Thomas was able to retaliate with a run of their own in the sixth to enter the final frame, 2-4.
  • After registering two hits in the seventh, the Scots were unable to tack on to their score before the Terriers used their home field advantage to chip away and cut their deficit to one (3-4), forcing a pitching change. However, the Terriers were able to seal the 5-4 walk-off win thanks to a two-run double up the middle.
Gordon v. Pitt-Greensburg
  • After two innings of scoreless action, the Bobcats were able to get on the board first, taking a 2-0 lead after taking advantage of a Scot miscue. But the Fighting Scots immediately answered back to tie it up at two after Jayden Johnson hit in the Rivera sisters.
  • In the fourth, Pitt-Greensburg grabbed the slight advantage again after a double to bring the score to 3-2. It wasn't until the final inning that the Scots turned up the heat to knot it up at 3-3 thanks to a single to short with the bases loaded from Emily Graham. With two outs and the bases juiced, freshman Abbey Murray drew a walk to seal the walk-off last second victory, 4-3.
Beyond The Box Score
  • Freshman Gina Terrazzano booked her first hits (2), RBIs (2), and run in game one.
  • The Fighting Scots are back at the DiamondPlex tomorrow, March 10 for the final day of the PFX Spring Games where they face Heidelberg at 2 p.m.
