Gordon College Softball ventured over to Beverly today to start the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) tournament, hosted by the Endicott College Gulls. First, the Scots squared up with the No. 1 seeded Gulls where they fought to stay in the winner's bracket but ultimately fell to their hosts, 2-6. Next, the Scots played the No. five seeded Salve Regina Seahawks for the first elimination game where the teams went back and forth holding the advantage until the Scots pulled ahead in the seventh to lock in the 12-10 victory and head on to the next round.Â
Gordon vs. Endicott
- The Scots immediately made their name known as they took advantage of their first ups to bring it in their first run thanks to back to back doubles from Ami and Isabella Rivera where the sisters traded places to take the 1-0 edge early on. However, the girls started off the home half of the first with a double to center, who soon scored after a ground out advanced the runner to third before eventually scoring off of a Scot miscue to knot it up 1-1. The Fighting Scots worked to reclaim the advantage in their next at bats as Emily Graham hit in Hannah Bouvier to make it 2-1 before the Gulls sat down the next two batters. Next, Endicott attempted to tie it up by attempting to put a runner in scoring position, however, Gordon's Gabrielle Olsen laced the ball down to second from behind the plate to catch the runner stealing and clear the bases.Â
- In the third, a Gull three-run homer put Endicott on top, 3-2 before the hosts earned a second run in the inning off of a single up the middle to bring the score to 4-2. Neither squad was able to reach a bag in the fourth, while the score remained at a standstill until the sixth when the Gulls tacked on two more runs, taking the 6-2 lead heading into the seventh before shutting down the Scots to take the 6-2 win.Â
Gordon vs. Salve Regina
- Gordon continued to come out firing, once again scoring first in their initial at bats to take the early 1-0 advantage after a hit from I. Rivera before an A. Rivera double shot down the left field line to put the Riveras on second and third before I. Rivera was able to cross the plate off of a wild pitch. However, the Seahawks answered back with a lead-off triple before a sacrifice fly evened out the score, 1-1. In the next inning, Gordon turned the tables as Emily Graham got a rally going with a single up the middle to catalyze a two-out rally with back to back singles from Emily Peterson and I. Rivera before another extra-base hit from A. Rivera drove in two more runs to take the 4-1 lead. But the Scots didn't hold their lead for long as the Seahawks retaliated with five runs in the bottom of the second to make the score 6-4.Â
- Meanwhile, the Fighting Scots were able to come within one in the third inning after Mara Little crossed the plate (5-6). The Scots went on to play impeccable defense, sitting down the next six batters in the third and fourth inning before both squads traded four runs to keep the Scots a run behind but bring the score to 9-10 heading into the sixth. Back to back Scot walks put Abby Murray in scoring position in the top of the sixth before a single from Olsen loaded the bases up for E. Peterson where the triple-threat slapper forced a walk to knot up the game, 10-10 before the Seahawks were able to get out of the inning. Three ground outs kept Salve scoreless in the sixth before the Scots took advantage of their final ups to take the 12-10 lead after a mix of walks and a hit strung together. Three outs away from one step closer to the CCC Championship, the Fighting Scots sat down all three batters faced in a row to seal the narrow 12-10 win.Â
