Johnson's Hot Bat Rockets Scots Past Nor'easters In CCC-Opener

Gordon College Softball opened up Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) play as they welcomed the University of New England (UNE) Nor'easters of Biddeford, Maine. The Fighting Scots had the hot bat today as the blue and white swept UNE with scores of 6-5 and 11-7.

Game One
  • In the third inning both squads broke the scoring drought, as UNE scored three runs in the top of the inning. Gordon answered right back scoring two runs of their own, thanks to hits by Liahna Messier, Emily Peterson, and Ami Rivera for a score of 3-2.
  • Lead off batter, Morgan Passolo, started the fifth inning off with a double to left field, followed by a Peterson's double down the left field line, which scored Passolo (4-3).
  • Maya Harris sent a solo shot over the right field fence in the bottom of the sixth inning to bring the blue and white within one (5-4) of the visitors.
  • Gordon went into the bottom of the seventh inning down two, and with runners on second and third, Emily Graham drove in the tying run with a ground ball to the shortstop. Senior, Jayden Johnson came up to bat, and lined a walk-off shot to right center field, bringing in Isabella Rivera and taking the victory 6-5.
Game Two
  • Gordon continued with the momentum from game one, as the team batted around in order, knocking in five runs off of six hits in the bottom of the first inning to go up 5-0.
  • The visitors started a comeback with a two-run inning in the top of the fifth, followed by a three-run inning to tie it all up 5-all. However, the Scots rallied in the bottom of the sixth, as Graham and Peterson scored off of an I. Rivera triple. Next batter up, A. Rivera knocked in her sister putting the Scots up 8-5. Yet again, Johnson came up clutch as she homered over center field with two ducks on the pond, extending the Fighting Scots lead to six runs (11-5).
  • With one inning left of light, the Nor'easters attempted to fight back, but with the steady defense and Graham on the rubber, the blue and white claimed the victory, 11-7.
Beyond The Box Score
  • Emily Graham notched a career-high of six strikeouts in game one.
  • Both, Maya Harris and Jayden Johnson, hit their first home runs of the season. Also, Johnson had a career-high of four RBIs in game two.
  • This marks the best start for the Scots in conference play since 2013.
  • The Fighting Scots stay at home in a non-conference match up against the Worcester State Lancers starting at 3 p.m. for a double-header.
