Game Recap: Softball |

I. Rivera Reaches 100 Hit Milestone On Day One Split

The Gordon College Softball team opened the season in Clermont, Florida at Legends Way against the Husson University Eagles and Carthage University Firebirds, where the Fighting Scots split on the day going 1-1. In game one, Husson defeated Gordon in extra innings, 3-2, but the Scots came back in game two to top Carthage, 6-5.

Gordon at Husson
  • The Eagles took the lead in the bottom of the first, 1-0 to open up the scoring on both sides.
  • In the top of the second, rookie Hailey Conde led off the inning with double down the right field line and later came around to score off of another double by Abby Murray to lock it up 1-all.
  • An Ami Rivera single caused havoc for the Husson outfielders, allowing Samantha Perkins to plate the go ahead run, 2-1.
  • Sophomore pitcher, Emily Graham, was stellar from the circle. The lefty only allowed one more run to score in the next five innings, before more time was needed as both squads were tied up at 2-2 forcing extra innings.
  • Gordon scored the go ahead run in the top of the eighth, but the home team was able to bring two runners home to secure the 4-3 win.
Gordon vs. Carthage
  • Carthage drew first blood in top of the first, going up 1-0, but the Scots tied up the game 1-all thanks to a hit up the middle by Conde, who eventually plated the tying run in the bottom of the second.
  • In the bottom of the fourth, the blue and white capitalized off of three hits that led to three runs which widened the gap 4-1.
  • An inning later, the Firebirds orchestrated a rally of their own to regain the slight edge, 5-4. The blue and white answered back immediately, however, in the bottom of the inning, with two on and one out, as Maya Harris drilled a sacrafice fly to right field, scoring A. Rivera to make it a 5-5 ballgame. Then, Conde took advantage of a Firebird miscue from the circle to put Gordon up top once again.
  • Graham continued to keep hitters off balance, making a relief appearance to record the final five outs for the Scots as they claimed their first victory of the season, 6-5.
Beyond The Box Score
  • Samantha Perkins and Hailey Conde each recorded their first collegiate hits in game one. Additionally, Conde's two hit game brought home her first RBI of her career.
  • Junior, Isabella Rivera, reached the 100 hit mark in today's second match up, which also knocked in two runs for the Scots.
  • In Maya Harris' first game as a Scot, the sophomore recorded her first RBI.
  • The Fighting Scots continue in Florida as they play Wheaton (Ill.) and Simmons on Monday, March 3 starting at 3 p.m.
