In the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) Quarterfinals, No. 4 Gordon College Men's Tennis took on the No. 5 Wentworth Leopards at The Pingree School over in Hamilton. In accordance with CCC Tournament rules, the match was played to decision and the Fighting Scots bested the Leopards, 5-1.
Racing out to a fast start in doubles were the No. 3 duo of
Carleton Riester and
Sam Miller who rolled through their counterparts, 8-1 to put Gordon on the board. Securing the second point for the Fighting Scots was the dynamic duo in No. 1 doubles (
Ezekiel Hall and
Jeffrey Bodner), 8-3. In a highly contested No. 2 double battle, the Leopards were able to sneak out with the 8-7 nail-bitter to make it 2-1 in favor of Gordon heading into singles.
In singles, No. 4 Riester and No. 2 Bodner nearly finished simultaneously with winning scores of 6-2, 6-1 and 6-1, 6-1, to put Gordon one point away from taking the match. Sealing the deal for the blue and white was the rookie
Larson Benthem who defeated his opponent, 6-3, 6-2 to claim the 5-1 win.
With the victory, Gordon will now hit the road to take on the top-seeded Nichols College Bison on Wednesday, May 1 at 4 p.m. in Dudley, Mass.
