The Gordon College Women's Basketball team hit the road to South Hadley, Mass. to tip off against the Mount Holyoke Lyons. The Lyons held a tight lead throughout the game until the fourth quarter where the Fighting Scots exploded for 21 points. However, the Lyons managed to hold on securing a 70-64 win over the Scots.
The Fighting Scots'
Ami Rivera posted a dominant double-double scoring 23 points and 13 rebounds,
Naomi Nicholson knocked down 14 points with six rebounds, whileÂ
Woynitu Ciccarello notched nine points.
Sophie Peters made a statement on the defensive end with three steals and a block.
Anna McMicheal recorded 16 points and eight assists for the Lyons, while
Hannah Geon and
Alex Twomey scored 12 points each.
How It Happened
- Both teams traded impressive defensive efforts as the score was held at 0-0 for the first three minutes of the game. Woynitu Ciccarello removed the lid off the basketball as she rained down a three. Ami Rivera's relentless six rebounds in the first quarter secured the Scots plenty of scoring opportunities. The first quarter resulted in a 10-15 lead for the Lyons.
- Rivera led the Scots' offense in the second quarter as she scored seven points. The Lyons held a three point lead heading into the second half (25-28).
- The Lyons widened their lead to eight points by the end of the third. Rivera scored six points while Brynn Barnhard put up four points keeping the Scots in range for a potential fourth quarter comeback.
- The Scots fought to regain control of the game. Naomi Nicholson and Rivera combined for 14 points in the final quarter while Sophie Peters recorded two steals. Collectively, the Scots shot 62.5% from the three point line. Despite the Scots' momentum, the Lyons escaped with a 70-64 win.
