Bison Withstand Scots' Gritty Second Half Comeback

Gordon College Women's Basketball traveled over to Dudley this afternoon for a Conference of New England (CNE) contest against the Nichols College Bison where the Bison held on for the 87-74 win.

For Gordon, Ami Rivera registered a double-double with 18 points and 11 boards, Sophie Peters also hit the double-double mark with 14 rebounds and 11 points, while Leah McGarvey netted 14 points. Also reaching the double-digit threshold were Sami Monighetti and Woynitu Ciccarello who each contributed 12 points.

CNE leading scorer, Abrianna Vazquez had a game-high 25 points, Alyvia Smith added 18, while Summer Klein chipped in 17 points.

How It Happened
  • In the high tempo Bison style of play, Nichols came out with an early lead (10-4) before Rivera made it a three-point game midway through the opening quarter. Rookies Ciccarello and McGarvey each cut the deficit to two-points late in the frame but Nichols widened the gap to 20-12 heading into the second.
  • McGarvey hit a jumper to open up the second, but the Bison answered right back maintaining their lead before stretching it to 39-28 at halftime.
  • Peters orchestrated a three-point play to make it a 10-point game after the Bison got their biggest lead of the night in the third. Continuing to press, Monighetti drained a shot from downtown to spark a 7-0 run to trail by three with just under two minutes remaining. With 29 ticks left in the third, Rivera found McGarvey on a fast-break for a layup to bring the score within one, but Nichols hit a shot as time expired, 60-56.
  • With 5:42 on the clock, Peters grabbed the offensive board before finding McGarvey who knocked in a layup (69-64). Nichols ran down the court to nail a three, but Ciccarello answered right back with a three of her own to keep the Scots within five. In the final minutes, the home team was able to endure the Scots' fight as the Bison came away with the victory.
