Women’s Basketball Upended by Westfield State

WENHAM, Mass.- The Gordon College women's basketball team absorbed a 95-78 loss to Westfield State Saturday evening at the Bennett Center as part of the Gordon Classic.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Gordon got off to a strong start, constructing a 26-22 lead after shooting 47.4% from the floor and 46.2% from beyond the arc in the first quarter.
  • Westfield State responded with 30 points in the second period while limiting the home side to 17 points to own a 52-43 advantage the intermission.
  • After Gordon's Abby Chewning (Beverly, Mass.) drained a pair of free throws with 15 seconds left in the third to cut the deficit to 68-67, the Owls capped off the third frame with a last-second trey by Caroline Galvani to own a 71-67 edge heading to the fourth.
  • The visitors stretched the margin to double-figures, 84-74, on a bucket by Kayley Downie with 3:28 remaining.
  • Westfield State closed the contest on an 8-0 run to clinch its second-consecutive win.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
  • Leah McGarvey (Harrisburg, Pa.) scored a team-high 22 points and grabbed five rebounds.
  • Sophie Peters (Sidney, Mont.) notched 18 points and hauled in seven boards.
  • Woynitu Ciccarello (East Haddam, Conn.) registered 13 points, four rebounds, and four assists.
  • Isabella Rivera (Concord, N.H.) added eight points and seven rebounds off the bench.
  • Sami Monighetti (Las Vegas, Nev.) finished with seven points and six assists.
  • Gordon concluded the contest with a field-goal percentage of 40% while connecting on 10-of-31 from three-point distance.
  • Westfield State shot 43.5% from the floor and 30% from the perimeter.
  • Grace Wigington poured in a game-best 33 points to pace the Owls while Alexa Davis, Caroline Galvani, and Sophia DeAngelis all finished in double-digit scoring.
 
LOOKING AHEAD:
Gordon begins Conference of New England action November 19 at home against Wentworth.
