Women’s Basketball Begins CNE Slate with Win Over Wentworth

WENHAM, Mass.- The Gordon College women's basketball team defeated Wentworth 65-59 Wednesday evening at the Bennett Center in the first Conference of New England (CNE) contest of the season.
 

THE BASICS:

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Gordon raced out to a double-digit lead with 4:27 left to play in the first quarter, 17-6, as Abby Chewning (Beverly, Mass.) splashed a three-pointer.
  • Wentworth closed out the opening period on an 11-0 run as the two teams ended the first frame deadlocked at 19-19.
  • The home side poured in 20 points in the second quarter while limiting the visitors to just six points to sport a 39-25 advantage at the half.
  • The Leopards outscored the Fighting Scots 16-9 in the third to trim the gap to 48-41 heading into the fourth period.
  • A layup by Leah McGarvey (Harrisburg, Pa.) and a trey by Jayme Kiser (Braintree, Mass.) stretched Gordon's lead to 12 points early in the fourth quarter, 53-41.
  • Despite Wentworth owning a 7-2 edge in scoring in the final minute of the contest, Gordon held on to pick up its first win of the season.
     
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
  • Sami Monighetti (Las Vegas, Nev.) poured in a team-best 13 points to go with eight assists.
  • Sophie Peters (Sidney, Mont.) tallied 12 points and gathered seven boards.
  • Woynitu Ciccarello (East Haddam, Conn.) finished with 10 points while Cassidy Dillon (Londonderry, N.H.) added a season-high eight points.
  • Gordon shot 36.5% from the floor and 28.6% from beyond the arc.
  • Wentworth concluded the game with a field-goal percentage of 43.6% while connecting on just 2-of-12 from three-point range.
  • Taylor Garabedian registered a double-double for the Leopards, scoring 19 points and grabbing 13 rebounds. Mia Luna Zayas netted 15 points and Elise Ayer chipped in with 14 points.
 
LOOKING AHEAD:
Gordon travels to Elms November 22 for a non-conference clash.
