Late Surge Lifts Women’s Basketball Past Fitchburg State

WENHAM, Mass.- The Gordon College women's basketball team engineered a fourth-quarter comeback to triumph 46-42 over Fitchburg State Tuesday evening at the Bennett Center.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • After a slow start, Gordon trailed 9-7 after 10 minutes of action.
  • Fitchburg State extended its lead to double-digits, 21-11, on a trey by Kaelynn Tanner with 6:19 remaining in the second quarter.
  • The home side trimmed the deficit just before the halftime horn on a three-pointer by Woynitu Ciccarello (East Haddam, Conn.), 27-24.
  • The Fighting Scots managed seven points in the third period while the Falcons mustered five points to cling to a 32-31 advantage.
  • Gordon held Fitchburg State scoreless in the final 4:52 and scored nine-consecutive points from the charity stripe down the stretch to claim a 46-42 come-from-behind victory.
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
  • Woynitu Ciccarello (East Haddam, Conn.) notched a game-best 22 points to go with four rebounds.
  • Sophie Peters (Sidney, Mont.) posted her third double-double of the year, scoring 11 points and grabbing 12 boards.
  • Leah McGarvey (Harrisburg, Pa.) finished with eight points and a season-high 11 rebounds.
  • Gordon was limited to just 16.7% shooting from the floor and drained 5-of-37 three-point attempts on the night.
  • Fitchburg State concluded the contest with a field-goal percentage of 31.4% to go with a 21.4% clip from behind the arc.
  • Shanell Smith-Akpan paced the Falcons with 14 points while Kaelynn Tanner tallied 11 points off the bench.
