Coach Warren Shumate joined the Gordon athletic department in July of 2009. In his first season at the helm for the Scots, Shumate was named The Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC) Coach of the Year for guiding his team to an 8-2 third-place finish in conference. Included in the season's successes was a 7-5 win over nationally ranked TCCC opponent, Endicott College, marking the program's first win over its crosstown rival since 2003.
His sophomore debut yielded similarly successful results, with the Scots once again finishing third behind nationally ranked Western New England and Endicott with a 7-3 TCCC record. The season also produced a pair of All-American selections in seniors Dan Utz, who was named to the USILA DIII All-American Honorable Mention squad, and Stuart Knechtle, a member of the USILA DIII All-Academic Team.Â
A 2005 graduate of Gordon, Shumate was a four-year starter and two-year captain in the Fighting Scots' lacrosse program, helping lead his team to its first ever NCAA tournament appearance in 2003. For his standout efforts he was four times selected to the Commonwealth Coast Conference All-Conference team and twice named an ECAC All-New England player. Additionally, he was honored by the College as Gordon's Senior Athlete of the Year following his final season.Â
Prior to his return to Gordon Shumate served as the head lacrosse coach at the Wakefield School in The Plains, Va. He also coached with an elite team in Manassas, Va. and has been involved with FCA Lacrosse for multiple years as both a player and coach.Â
Warren and his wife, Lindsay (Kronzer) Shumate, a 2007 Gordon graduate, currently reside in Topsfield, Mass.Â
