Box Score
Hosting the Lions of Eastern Nazarene College tonight in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) women's volleyball action, the Fighting Scots battled to a 3-2 win over their guests to improve to 15-12 overall, 2-5 in conference this season. The loss drops ENC to 12-16 overall, 1-6 in league play.
Both teams looked strong from the outset, rallying through a close-fought opening frame before the Scots took the eventual 27-25 win to start the night behind seven kills from
Lauren Kranyak (Jr./Locust Grove, Va.) and 13 assists from
Joy Kimmel (So./Madison, Conn.). Determined not to give Gordon a stronghold, ENC responded immediately in set two, 25-17, to even the match at 1-1.
Looking to regain the momentum, the Scots'
Faith Gerdes (So./Wall Lake, Iowa) recorded seven kills and Kimmel dished another 11 assists to put the Scots ahead, 2-1, with a 25-18 decision in set three. Following a similar trend to the previous sets, though, the Lions recaptured that momentum in the fourth with a 25-19 victory to force the decisive fifth set.
With playoff implications in the balance, however, the Scots took command in the rubber match, dueling through the opening points before pulling away down the stretch to bury the Lions, 15-10, in the final frame for the overall victory.
Kimmel finished the outing with 47 assists and 15 digs, while Kranyak recorded 19 digs and 17 kills, Gerdes posted 15 kills, and senior captain
Keri Hustus (Eastford, Conn.) contributed 27 digs.
ENC's effort was paced by Kori Sorensen (So./Quincy, Mass.) with 31 digs, Dana Day (Fr./Coarsegold, Calif.) with 26 digs, and Burdina Tuiava (So./Colorado Springs, Colo.) with 16 digs and 14 assists.
The Scots return to the court on Thursday, Oct. 25 as they host non-conference St. Joseph's (Maine) at 7 p.m. ENC will travel to Wentworth on Saturday, Oct. 27 for their final regular season matchup.
