Balanced Attack Leads Scots Past SUNYIT, 17-5

Box Score
On the road in Myrtle Beach, S.C. for their spring training trip, the Fighting Scots stayed unbeaten with a dominant 17-5 win over non-conference SUNYIT at the Grand Park at Market Commons today, upping their season record to 2-0 overall. The loss marks the second of the week for the Wildcats, who drop to 0-2 on the season.

The Scots utilized a balanced attack with eight different goal scorers to cruise to the 12-point victory. Junior Jane Dietrich (West Hartford, Conn.) led all scorers with four goals and two assists, while junior Anna Blomberg (Simsbury, Conn.) recorded three goals and an assist and sophomore Abby Illian (Hillsdale, N.J.) notched her second collegiate hat trick. Rounding out the scoring were senior Mindy Fowler (Winslow, Maine), junior Stephanie Fitzgerald (Groveland, Mass.), sophomore Grace Fabry (Escondido, Calif.), and freshman Bailey Grinnell (South Hamilton, Mass.) with one goal apiece and sophomore Brittany Hawkins (Hampstead, N.H.), grad student Krysti Leach (Naples, Maine) and Fitzgerald with one assist each. Senior Alana Woods (Medford, Mass.) and freshman Ani Karabashian (Ventor, N.J.) split the day in net, combining for three saves in the win.

For the Wildcats, Amanda Bohne (Jr./Clay, N.Y.) led her team's effort with two tallies, while Carli Rogan (Fr./Colonie, N.Y.), Laura Tolbert (Fr./Cicero, N.Y.), and Caitlin Cottell (Sr./Eaton Town, N.Y.) netted one each and Ana Esposito (So./Lisbon, Portugal) and Jenna Lashua (So./Heuvelton, N.Y.) handed out one assist apiece. Keeper Aubrey Campbell (Jr./Aubrey, N.Y.) had a standout day in the cage, turning away 12 of the Scots' attempts.

After opening the game with a 7-0 run over the first 18 minutes, the Scots established a healthy lead they would not relinquish the rest of the way. Cottell stopped the game-opening surge with SUNY's first tally on an unassisted effort at 11:35, but Gordon closed out the first stanza with another big 7-1 run to hold a commanding 14-2 advantage at the break.

Despite even scoring in the second frame with both teams netting three, the Scots' attack had done its damage while the defense held strong to preserve the victory.

Gordon returns home to host non-conference Emerson on Tuesday, March 19 at 7 p.m., while SUNYIT travels back to Utica to visit Bard on Friday, March 22.
