WENHAM, Mass.—Gordon Field Hockey controlled the Commonwealth Coast Conference matchup versus Western New England from wire to wire, as the Fighting Scots handed the Golden Bears a 4-1 defeat. Senior
Brittany Hawkins (Hampstead, N.H.) scored a goal and assisted two others to lead Gordon to its second straight conference win.
The Fighting Scots started off fast, earning a penalty corner just a minute after the opening whistle. Gordon registered the game's first 10 shots, but freshman goalkeeper Renee Rossignol (Topsham, Maine) was one of the stars of the contest. Rossignol made six saves in the first 16 minutes of the game to keep the barrage of Gordon attempts from reaching the back of the goal.
Gordon was finally able to break through a seemingly impenetrable Rossignol in the 19
th minute when senior
Karli Weiss (Perkasie, Pa.) on an unassisted attempt from just inside the arch. Weiss took control of a loose ball just inside of midfield and carried it all the way down into the scoring zone before blasting a shot across her body. The ball immediately lifted into the air, over the rising stick of Rossignol for the first score of the game.
Western New England's only opportunity in the first half was a good one. After countering Gordon's goal and earning a penalty corner, the Golden Bears pressured the Fighting Scots into a mistake on defense. Megan French (Nelson, N.H.) stood all alone about eight yards from the goal and took a big swing at the ball. French connected crisply, but junior defender
Lydia Ellsworth (West Chester, Pa.) got low to the ground for the defensive save.
Gordon scored its second of the game as time was dwindling down in the first half, when Hawkins broke free of her mark on the right side. Hawkins dribbled toward the goal and ripped a pass across the face of the net. The hard pass found the stick of freshman
Alyssa Doucett (Barrington, N.H.), who tipped it past Rossignol for her second collegiate goal.
The Fighting Scots led 2-0 at the halftime break and held a 14-1 advantage in shots. Rossignol stopped seven of the nine attempts on net for the Golden Bears.
Western New England tried to flip the momentum early in the second half and received two quick penalty corners for its efforts. Gordon bunkered down into its defensive half and kept the Golden Bears from getting a good look at net.
Gordon kept possession in its offensive half for the next 14 minutes until the 52
nd minute. Rossignol made four saves in that span, but the relentless Gordon attack wouldn't take no for an answer. Hawkins got in on the scoring on an assist from
Courtney Scott (Herndon, Pa.) at the near post. An All-American last fall, Scott made her 2014 debut after missing the first 10 games of the season due to injury and contributed greatly in limited minutes.
The Golden Bears' lone goal of the game came just four minutes later at 55:22 when Allison Jackson (Mahopac, N.Y.) poked through a Brittany DeLima (Branchville, N.J.) pass.
Shannon Hicks (Scarborough, Maine) made a save on an initial pass, but DeLima found Jackson at the left post for the easy score.
Gordon ended the scoring for the evening in the 63
rd minute on a tally by
Grace Fabry (Escondido, Calif.)—her second of the year. Scott made the initial attempt at goal, but was stopped by Rossignol. Hawkins was able to stab at the rebound and poke it through Rossignol's legs, leading to Fabry's run and tap for the goal.
The Golden Bears held a 11-5 advantage in penalty corners after earning seven in the final 15 minutes of regulation. Gordon held the shots advantage 23-4. Rossignol came up with an incredible 13 saves on the evening, but was credited with the loss. Hicks made two saves to lead the Fighting Scots.
Western New England falls to 3-6 on the year (1-4 CCC) and matches up with UNE on Saturday at home. Gordon improves to 5-6 in 2014 (3-2 CCC) and celebrates Homecoming on Saturday with an 11 a.m. showdown against rival Endicott. The Gulls currently lead the CCC in the standings; however the Fighting Scots defeated Endicott three times last season.
