Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Scots Shock Gulls in Double Overtime

WENHAM, Mass.—Gordon Field Hockey's Homecoming matchup with Commonwealth Coast Conference leader Endicott ended on a perfect note. Senior Courtney Scott (Herndon, Pa.) returned to the starting lineup for the first time in 2014 and scored the game-winner in double overtime to hand the Gulls their first CCC loss of the season, 3-2.

Gordon and Endicott traded blows at the beginning of the first half, but the Fighting Scots had the better opportunities early by outshooting the Gulls 5-1 over the first 15 minutes. Karli Weiss (Perkasie, Pa.) looked like she could have two goals in the 17th and 20th minutes, but both were stopped by Francheska Ventura (Lawrence, Mass.). The second shot provided some chaos in the arch that the Fighting Scots needed. After the initial stop by Ventura on Weiss' clear attempt, Scott flicked the ball back toward net and found the back of the goal for a 1-0 lead.

The Fighting Scots struck again in the 27th minute off a penalty corner by Katherine Bailey (Baltimore, Md.). Bailey found Weiss at the top, who quickly passed it off freshman Alyssa Doucett (Barrington, N.H.) for the finish. Gordon held a 9-5 advantage in shots in the first half and each keeper was forced to make five saves in the period.

Endicott dominated possession in the second half as they looked to claw their way back into the game. Maggie Layo (Sandwich, Mass.) quickly changed momentum with a tally just two minutes into the second half on a feed from Emily Sawchuck (Cumberland, Maine), her first collegiate goal. Sawchuck added one to her conference-leading total in the 54th minute to bring the Gulls back all square.

Regulation finished tied at two despite a few desperation attempts by the Gulls to end the game down the stretch. The two teams settled into a defensive battle in the first overtime, with each one registering two shots and no clear goal chances.

Still tied at two, Gordon and Endicott headed into the second overtime looking for a golden goal. It took only one shot to end it, when Scott finished a cross from Hawkins in the center of the arch. Hawkins broke away down the right side of the field and found Scott unmarked for the walk-off goal.
Ventura ended the game with six saves to her credit, while Shannon Hicks (Scarborough, Maine) picked her sixth win of the season with nine saves.

Endicott (10-2, 5-1 CCC) has a week off before returning home to play Roger Williams at 1 p.m. Gordon (6-6, 4-2 CCC) returns to non-conference action when New England College comes to town on Monday in the sixth game of a seven-game home stand.
