Bison Stymie Fighting Scots on Senior Night

WENHAM, Mass.—It was a full team effort on defense for the Nichols Bison, as they fended off a relentless Gordon attack to steal a 1-0 win on Saturday night at the Brigham Athletic Complex. Despite outshooting the Bison 16-5 in the game, Nichols' outstanding defensive unit came up with big save after big save to knock off the touted Fighting Scots for the second consecutive season.

Gordon had never lost back-to-back games under Coach Derek Potteiger and an emotional senior night game against the second-place team in the Commonwealth Coast Conference equaled a big game. Coming off a disappointing loss to Keene State on Tuesday, Gordon looked to get back into the scoring groove that had carried them in the middle of the conference schedule.

Nichols came out of the chute to pressure Gordon's defensive unit with three corner kicks in the opening four minutes. A good shot on a defensive breakdown in Gordon's back half by Cooper Milano (Caldwell, N.J.) was pushed wide by Josh Spoonhour (Greencastle, Pa.) to keep the Bison from generating an early lead.

The rest of the first half was dominated by the home team, as Nichols struggled with Gordon's speed in the midfield. Wave after wave, Gordon pressured the Bison net to no avail. Nathan Bilbie (Shrewsbury, Pa.) looked to have a sure goal in the eighth minute, but the ball was saved by Jeremy Nash (West Springfield, Mass.). Only three minutes later, Evan Crocker (Akron, Ohio) headed a ball of a cross that caught the inside of the post, but somehow shot along the goal line and was kicked out of danger.

Caleb Cole (Coatesville, Pa.) also had an incredible opportunity on a low ball across the face of the goal, but a Nichols' defender was in the right place at the right time for the save. In the 39th minute, Cole had another opportunity on a through ball in the 18-yard box, but his chip was tipped by Nash just enough to hit the top of the crossbar and out of play. David Egeler (Danbury, Conn.) came in as a substitute on the left side and poked a loose ball back toward net, but a defender was able to head it out just as it was about to cross the line for a score.

Gordon owned possession and the shot count in the first half, 9-2, but had nothing to show for its opportunities.

A foul 10 minutes into the second half set up the Bison about 25 yards from the net. Michael Perry (Plainville, Mass.) ripped the free kick from left to right and sound the head of Aaron Sinclair (Saco, Maine). Sinclair then headed it back across the goal, catching the Gordon defense out of position and Rielee Mohsin (Stuart, Fla.) was able to finish with a header of his own.

The Fighting Scots continued to press their attack on the Bison, but two more unbelievable team saves on would-be goals silenced the explosive offense. Gordon outshot the Bison 7-3 in the second period, but nine saves delivered by Nash and the Bison defense made the difference. Gordon also had 10 corners to the Bison' five.

Gordon has Mitchell College coming to town on Wednesday night at 6 p.m. at Brigham, while Nichols has a full week off before traveling to Biddeford, Maine for a CCC matchup at UNE.
