Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Fighting Scots Win Two in Home Tri-Match

WENHAM, Mass.—Gordon Women's Volleyball snapped a winless streak with a commanding 3-0 victory over visiting Mass Maritime Academy in the first match of a tri-match on Saturday at the Bennett Center. Gordon raced out to a big start by taking the first two sets 25-8 and 25-9, before finishing off the Buccaneers 25-11 in the final set. Senior Faith Gerdes (Wall Lake, Iowa) led all scorers with 10 kills and a .533 hitting percentage to lead the Fighting Scots to the large margin of victory.

The Fighting Scots had a lock hold on the match from the very start, jumping up to a 14-3 lead in the first set and never looking back. A mix of quality serving and finished attacks spurred on a Gordon effort that has struggled since the start of Commonwealth Coast Conference play. Joy Kimmel played a near flawless game managing Gordon's offense and finished with 29 assists and five service aces, leading the team in each category.

After rolling through the first two sets, Mass Maritime was able to get things going in the third and final set. Gordon pulled away in the end, 25-11 to close out the match. Charleen Klangos (Lowell, Mass.) played a steady match for the Bucs with five digs, a solo block and a kill.

Maggie Risma (Hudson, Ohio) split time between libero and outside hitter, pummeling the opposition to the tune of six kills and a .556 hitting percentage. Laura Schmidt (Stuart, Fla.) also had a good game with six kills. Jenna Labbadia (Berlin, Conn.) finished second on the team in points with three kills, three service aces and 2.5 kills.

Gordon hit a season-high .318 hitting percentage as a team in the match, as its previous high was .148 against UMass-Dartmouth in September.

In the third match of the day, the winners from the previous two matches battled to take home the prize of a tri-match sweep. A two-hour layover didn't stop Gordon's attack from looking as sharp as it had against Mass Maritime and the Fighting Scots went up big early against Castleton State.

Risma was the star of the opening set, hitting six of her eight attack attempts for dynamic kills. Despite being out of her normal libero position, the sophomore looked comfortable on the outside and registered a hitting percentage of .750 in a 25-10 win over the Spartans.

Gordon looked as strong in the second set, but Castleton State began to match them punch for punch. Neither team was able to make much of a run, but Gordon held a slight 17-14 lead midway through the stanza. Gerdes made up for an attack error that had brought the Spartans within three points by sending an attack to the back left corner for a point. Gerdes' shot sent the Fighting Scots on a 6-0 run thanks in part to three service aces by Krystal Vander Ark (Santa Barbara, Calif.).

The third set had an odd flow as the Spartans got out to a big lead early—16-8—before Gordon began to fight back. Ultimately several time delays combined with some finishes by the Spartans' attack did the Fighting Scots in, 25-18.

Gordon rebounded nicely in the fourth and final set. Despite a slow start to the game, the Fighting Scots tied the game at 10 points aside and never trailed again. Serving was a huge part of Gordon's success in a two-match sweep and it didn't fail them in their final game of the day, beating the Spartans 25-17.

J'Leen Diaz (West Hartford, Conn.) led the Spartans with six kills on the afternoon and a service ace to boot. Chambers continued her strong day with 19 digs and three total blocks to go with an impressive game against Mass Maritime. Michaela Babineau (Fitchburg, Mass.) paced the attack for the Spartans with 11 assists.

Risma's new positioning led to a team-high 12 kills on the day and she was still able to take in 17 digs in the second match. Labbadia had nine kills, but a team-high .400 hitting percentage to go along with three block assists and five service aces. Freshman Meghan Hokanson (Coon Rapids, Minn.) also had a great game for the Fighting Scots with seven kills and a .235 hitting percentage. Kimmel had 43 dimes in powering an efficient Gordon attack.

Gordon remains at home with Suffolk coming to town on Wednesday night at 7 p.m.
