Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Huskies Claw Way Past Fighting Scots in Three Sets

WENHAM, Mass.—Gordon Volleyball fell to 7-10 on the season with a three-set loss to visiting Little East opponent, Southern Maine, on Thursday night at the Bennett Center. Talented freshman Jessica Williamson (Goffstown, N.H.) powered the Huskies with 15 kills and 3.5 blocks to the convincing win over the Fighting Scots. Southern Maine improves to 11-6 on the year.

Gordon looked to respond after a tough five-set defeat at hands of the University of New England on Tuesday and the first set had plenty of promise. The Fighting Scots raced ahead by four or five points several times in the first stanza, but each time the Huskies caught up with them. Gordon forced the Huskies into a timeout after jumping to a 16-11 lead thanks to the consistent serve of Krystal Vander Ark (Santa Barbara, Calif.), but Southern Maine found its chops out of the break and made it square at 18 points aside.

The Fighting Scots led late in the set, 22-21, when the Huskies made their final move. An error by the Scots tied the set score and then three straight wins on-serve gave the Huskies a one-set advantage, including a block to end the set by Megan Nilson (Granby, Conn.).

Southern Maine became the aggressor in the second set and opened with a 12-7 run thanks to a handful of kills by Monica Raymond (Sanbornton, N.H.). Gordon countered with the serve of sophomore Maggie Risma (Hudson, Ohio), which caught the Huskies' back line off guard on more than occasion. Gordon took six straight points to take its first lead of the set at 13-12, but the lead would be short-lived. The Huskies managed to drop only six points for the remainder of the set and took the win 25-18.

The Huskies were able to race ahead again in the third and final set, leading by as many as 10 points before a late rally from the Fighting Scots. Southern Maine finished the sweep with a 25-18 win in the third.

Williamson led all players with her 15 kills, while also leading her team in blocks and digs (16). Jessica Garrett (Las Vegas, Nev.) also had a great match for the Huskies with six kills, two service aces and a .211 hitting percentage. Libero Demi Ruder (Grand Junction, Colo.) had 15 digs on the defensive side for the Huskies. Nilson dished out 22 assists.

Laura Schmidt (Stuart, Fla.) had eight kills to lead the Fighting Scots attack, while Faith Gerdes (Wall Lake, Iowa) and Jessica Burdick (Brewerton, N.Y.) each had seven strikes. Risma had two service aces and 34 digs, while Vander Ark finished with three aces to lead the team. Joy Kimmel (Madison, Conn.) passed out 27 assists on the evening, but the Fighting Scots 27 errors did them in compared to only nine for the Huskies.

The Huskies are back in action on Saturday at home against Mount Ida, while Gordon is off until next Wednesday when they travel to Salve Regina for another conference match.
