Seahawks Sweep Scots in Women's Volleyball

NEWPORT, R.I. – The Salve Regina women's volleyball team extends its winning streak to five games with a 3-0 sweep of Gordon College.
 
The Seahawks won the first set 25-15, but were challenged in the second and third sets.
 
The Seahawks trailed 8-3 early in the second and 13-10 before a 12-0 run. A Gordon service error gave Salve Regina the serve then Taylor Violet (Tiverton, R.I.) served for the next 11 points as Salve went from down three to up nine, 22-13.  The Seahawks eventually won the set 25-19.
 
As the night went on the sets continued to get closer. Salve Regina jumped out to a 10-5 lead in the third, but a 5-0 run for the Scots tied the set again.  The Seahawks eventually led 24-18 and had match point but could not close out the Scots. Gordon orchestrated a 3-0 run to draw within three, 24-21, but an attack error ended the Scots comeback hopes and gave Salve Regina the sweep.
 
Violet led the Seahawks with 29 assists, nine digs, two kills, a service ace, and a block. Jennifer Duggan (Merrimack, N.H.) finished with 12 kills, 15 digs, and four service aces. Senior captain and libero Dianno Tauro (Melrose, Mass.) registered 13 digs, and an assist while junior Chrissy Fraga (Milford, Mass.) had 11 digs.
 
For Gordon, Joy Kimmel (Madison, Conn.) led the way with 19 assists, eight digs, and three kills. Faith Gerdes (Wall Lake, Iowa) led the Scots in kills with six while sophomore libero Maggie Risma (Hudson, Ohio) lead the team in digs with 16.
 
Salve Regina improves to 11-7 on the season and 3-1 in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) play. Gordon falls to 7-11 overall and 0-4 in conference play. '
 
The Fighting Scots will look to break through their losing streak when they host a tri-match with Mass Maritime and Castleton State on  at Saturday beginning at 10 a.m.
